Hello, my daughter is accepted in BC ,northeastern and university of Rochester - which one is better for pre med track ? She is thinking of major in business and taking the pre med requirements . I personally am not sure if that is possible in terms that it would be difficult to get the good grades needed for pre med. Any opinions on that? And which school has a better reputation in general ? Thank you
Rochester does not have undergraduate business. Is cost a factor?
Cost would be similar to all three colleges - BC would be a bit more but we don’t want to base the decision on money - we would like the best possible school that she could get in - and yes I think for Rochester they don’t have majors but they do have clusters . Business is back up plan in case she can’t get the GPA for pre med.
An online source has a list under the title, “Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs.” Rochester is the only one of your daughter’s three that is included. I noticed UAA schools in general did particularly well. I’d check the methodology, though, to see if the criteria for selection is meaningful, as well as for any signs of bias.
Btw, the path to a career in business often has little to do with an undergraduate major in business. An economics major is one common way to cover that base, though there are other paths as well.
Any of them will provide a solid pre-med education. Pre-med requirements are very standard… a year of bio, a year of general chem, a year of organic chem, a year of calculus, a year of physics, expository writing… every university will cover these topics well.
Thank you all- we r going to Boston this weekend to get a better feel of the schools- hopefully we will find the right answers .
It seems to me that for a pre-med track, Northeastern might not be the best fit as she will spend a semester or two in co-op. Since she won’t be looking for work upon graduation, this will just make her undergrad last longer without the huge benefit of the co-op-- being able to jump into the workforce when she’s done. ???
Yes they do. It’s rather new, but they do have it now.

I would go with BC or Northeastern. BC has the better business program, while Northeastern is better for the sciences. Your daughter should visit each school and see which campus she likes better, as they are very different. BC is a very traditional campus with a slight religious element, while Northeastern has more of an urban feel in the actual city (Back Bay).
Also, have you determined how much you’ll be receiving in aid or scholarships? Both schools are very expensive.
Everybody who would rather spend 4 years.in Rochester rather than 4 years in Boston raise your hand.
I’m not seeing very many hands.
The big city is not for every student.
^^^ That really depends. Would you be in Boston?
Bc’s campus straddles the Boston/Newton line. Newton is a very safe and wealthy suburb. So if u don’t like big cities then u won’t really have to deal with one. But if u want a big city, you hop on the trolley right across the street from BC’s campus and you are in Boston. Northeastern is urban, no doubt about it. Don’t go there unless you like city life.
This past winter? :))
In general, I’ll admit I like Rochester more than Boston. Big cities aren’t my thing.
As big cities go, Boston is pretty manageable compared to nyc, LA, Chicago, Philly, etc…It is smaller, more compact, safer, and has good mass transit.
^ The Economist ranked New York City as the tenth safest large city in the World, and the safest in the U.S.
