BC vs. Penn vs. Duke vs. etc...

I’m a student from Rhode Island interested in going pre-med during college. I’ve narrowed down my college choices to BC, Penn, and Duke (also Harvard/Princeton, but I don’t think I’d get in). My stats are probably above average for BC and about average or a little below for the ivies. I don’t know whether to apply early decision to Penn or action to BC. Penn would be my number one choice if I got into all my schools, hence the ED. But if chances are pretty good I would be rejected or deferred, I’d much rather apply to BC early action (legacy kid) and have a college I know I’m into. Another thing is…some people have said that in pre-med, you should stand out in your class to get to med school. I’d feel that I have a better chance of standing out at BC, but then again, its hard to say no to a Penn education. Any thoughts about this?

“I’d much rather apply to BC early action (legacy kid) and have a college I know I’m into”

do that then. that way you can still RD Penn.

doesn’t BC offer early action (not restricted early action?)

Yes but his/her problem is that if you do EA at BC, you cannot apply Early Decision to another school.

Personally, I would do EA at BC and RD at Penn. If your stats are a little below the average for Penn, you would most likely be deferred to RD anyway.

wait a minute. u can still do EA at BC and ED at Penn. the EA at BC is not binding so how can’t u do iT?

BC’s EA program is restrictive in the sense that, although you can still apply to other EA and RD programs, you cannot apply EA to BC if you are applying ED to another school.

For great information on what it takes to get into Med school, go to the Pre-Med Topics forum and start with the sticky threads at the top of the page.

I acutally would probably ED to Duke if I were you. It offers a great premed environment, awesome premed advising, an excellent med center nearby for internships, good weather, good social life, top-notch sports, gorgeous campus, etc. etc. I think it’s even easier to get into ED than Penn slightly so I recommend applying there ED to maximize your chances. Penn is also a good choice. Whatever you do, apply ED to one of these places. DO NOT WAIT for RD where the competition will be significantly harder.

If you are an on-the-margin candidate (as you seem to believe you are), then you should definitely take advantage of the ED boost to Penn or Duke.
