Georgetown has already made a ton of indications that it wants to be Ivy League, and feels ashamed of its Catholic heritage.

In my first philosphy class at BC, the first thing we talked about were the Sophists, those Greeks who talked so beautifully and sounded so smart, but were in fact masters of vacuous deception. It was important to be aware of them to understand just how brilliant Socrates (via Plato) was.

After watching the BIG EVENT on Sunday, I can only assume the University of Notre Dame does not have such classes to prepare its students to be aware of the difference between appearance and substance. They swallowed the Sophist in Chief’s baloney, one smooth word after the next.

No doubt many of them had voted for Obama in the 2008 election. Which is fine. If they thought he provided a better option than McCain, fine. But what it seemed like yesterday was that they allowed their November vote to trump their Catholic conscience. It’s fine to vote for someone who’s pro-abortion, if in your concience you think he’s the better choice. But it DOESN’T follow that you have to fall all over yourselves to HONOR him.

So…you students at BC (regardless of where your professors stand) are in a position to claim the title of America’s Top CATHOLIC University. It wont’ be as hard as it sounds. Just keep your ears open, question things that sound just too too smooth, and remember the Sophists.
