In May 2011, a forum member (probably a hs or college student) revealed her frustration with the relationships in her life. She said that she feels that most people are self-centered, and she was starting to lose her faith in humanity.

One mom gave the following answer, which I positively love:

“But, I think your issue is you feel you give more than you get. I think you need to stop keeping score and not worry about what others do. Just be the best person you can, and in the end you will come out ahead. You can’t control what others do or don’t do, so let it go and I promise good things will come your way.”

This advice is so uplifting and inspiring. Thank you.

I agree that it is great to “pay it forward,” as we never know how even small actions we may do that can really help someone in life. Giving enriches the giver. Glad that the mom’s words now resonate with you.

Have always felt that “keeping score” is a waste of energy that can be better used for things that matter!

Totally agree! I have a relative who holds so many grudges. I have always maintained that I am just too darn lazy for grudges-it requires so much negative energy. And I know I’m happier for it.

I was astounded when I met a man who said, “Don’t you measure yourself against anyone you meet and decide if you’re above them or below them when you meet them?” I was really shocked, as it seems like such a waste of energy and would probably be so inaccurate.

Nearly everyone I meet is better than I am at some things but perhaps not as good as I am in other areas. This variety keeps my life interesting. I think weighing and gauging people (especially when initially meeting) can really narrow your life and is likely conveyed to the people you interact with.

A relative said, “Wow, you & your kids & husband are really different. You all treat people like everyone’s equal.” I smiled and said, “That’s probably because that’s how we really feel.”

Some days we all are able to give more, especially when we’re healthy and happy and OUR needs are well met. Some days, we take more, especially if we’re under the weather, having challenges, don’t have the support we need.
