Beautiful Passages

Thus begins Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver. I’m a real fan of her work, and found The Poisonwood Bible one of the most memorable and riveting stories I’ve ever read. I’ve just started Acuna. While perusing it in the bookstore, it was this opening paragraph that hooked me and told me Barbara would deliver yet again. In large portion, I read for literary candy—you know, those passages that are so savory, so “Oh God, let’s read that again”, that I can veritably taste the words in my mouth, and I’m often prompted to read them aloud. Quite frankly, Kingsolver had me at “as the hem of the sky began to whiten.”—hem of the sky…How beautiful.

I thought I’d start a thread in which people could quote short passages from their favorite authors, passages that make you go, “uhmmmmm, that was good—wish I’d written that!” It’s obvious from the “Best Books” thread, that CC is well populated by readers of excellent writing. Please share your favorite passages from the works of authors whom you admire. We can share a feast that, unlike this upcoming thanksgiving’s, will be totally non-caloric and guilt free.:)

Oops, I just realized that I posted this thread in the wrong forum. Please forgive me. Could a moderator kindly reassign this one to the Parents’ Cafe?

^I’m moving it now.
