Hello I’m 18 years old , I’ve always wanted to become a psychologist. And was planning to major in it . But recently I found out I had something called generalizing anxiety disorder and I’m currently taking Zoloft a medication to help with my anxiety. My anxiety is severe. Is it possible to become a psychologist while having an anxiety disorder?
Yes, of course. You can become pretty much anything with an anxiety disorder, other than a handful of jobs that necessarily prevent it.
You will continue to take the medication to keep your anxiety under control, and stay with your care team - presumably a psychiatrist if you have the prescription; perhaps also a psychologist if you think you might benefit from talk therapy. When you go to college, set up a situation that allows you to continue ongoing care. When you go to a PhD program for psychology, you’ll need to do the same thing there.
There is of course the off chance that you find that counseling other people triggers your anxiety, but you’ll have to monitor that and be honest with yourself.
