Becoming a Reader

Do you guys know how hard it is to become a reader? (specifically for the EECS department) If I have an A/A+ in the course, am I very likely to be hired as a reader? If not, then how do you improve your chances as they don’t ask you for much other information.

bump! I really want to know too, but not EECS, just in general (need them monies)…and how is the process for becoming a ugsi? (in the future haha)

Bump? lol 10char

If you have an A-/A/A+ then you are even eligible to become a TA

For me, i got an email from the department to apply to be a reader. If that is not the case, i think you should get a clear answer if you talk to the professor him/herself for the class next semester.

I would say it also depends on the class. I was both a reader and a TA as an undergraduate, I got both positions by simply filling out the TA/Reader application on the EECS website. I think in general it’s more difficult to become a reader if you are a freshman/sophomore, simply because there’ll be more applications for lower-div classes and junios and seniors will get priority. There’s less competition for upper divs (since there are not as many students in them anyway), but some of them don’t even need readers.

You’re fine with an A+/A. An A- will worsen your chances, simply because there’ll most likely be enough applications from people who got A’s. For lower-divs at least.

As for becoming a TA, you probably should know the professor or/and have done very well in the class. An A- already worsens your chances considerably.

Anyway, just fill out the form and see what happens. When I was applying most of the stuff was very last-minute so you’ll never what you get.

being friends with the prof is probably the best insurance to getting the job.

Awesome - Thanks! :)
