Bed sheets

We are in need of some new sheets at our house. Any recommendations? Any type to stay away from?

After many attempts, I wound up using Sealy Best Fit from JC Penney that were recommended in Consumer Reports (quite awhile ago… not in the May 2010 ratings)

Our mattress is tall, and it was hard to find ones that I could easily get on the bed. The Sealy Best Fit are softer than I like, and more expensive than I like (but I got them on sale).

However, it is so easy to make the bed, that I’m content. The fitted sheet is made from 2 fabrics: one piece takes care of the 2 long sides of the mattress, and the top of the mattress. The head and the foot of the fitted sheet is made from a stretchy, jersey fabric. I keep thinking it won’t last well, but we’ve had them for several years without any problem.

not sure if they’re still made, but that’s my input

The sheets I have purchased from Land’s End have lasted forever. Both my kids love the knit jersey sheets

Buy the best you can afford - good sheets are well worth the price and will last many years longer than cheaply made. January white sales are a good time to get a bit of a discount, but sheets are on sale year round as well. I like Italian or French percale:

[SFERRA Celeste Sheets Sheets](http://www.sferra.com/product/sheets/11719-4167/sferra-celeste-sheets.html)

These are pricier than JC Penney or other retailers, but the quality for the price of Sferra is actually very good.

pottery barn has great quality in everything they sell.

We generally buy our sheets from Ross with the highest 100% cotton thread count we can find in the size we’re looking for. It has worked pretty well for us. Sometimes we have had good luck at Macy’s during their sales as well. We have just finally given away flannel sheets we bought from LLBean on our honeymoon 25 years ago, so we get good wear out of our bedding!

The SFERRA sheets look nice. But a king set is around $500. That’s hard to justify when very nice sheet sets can be found on sale for under $100.

We did upgraded to very nice (just not ultra) sheets a few years ago at a Macy’s sale after getting spoiled by night at a luxiorious hotel. We also bought down comforter at a 75% off. And more pillows too;) It’s been very nice!

I must say, I find it quite funny to see this thread on collegeconfidential. I do suppose there are a lot of parents here.

If you think this is an odd topic, you are new to the cafe. We parents talk about everything here- sheets, gnats, traffic and vacation advise and occasionally we talk about our children.

Keep the suggestions coming. I am hoping to find something this week. I have to say the SFERRA sheets sound nice but my dh would think I had lost it if I spent that kind of money on sheets.

Bought my last set of sheets at Tuesday Morning. They’ve been fine.

I can find good sheets on sale at Steinmart, and TJ Maxx or Homegoods. I look for the thread counts, not the brands. And they are nowhere near $500 for a king set. And they last and last. I even have a set from Target that has to be nearly 20 years old.

I don’t buy sheets with ANY polyester in them. They pill.

I have had excellent luck at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Another tip…when I buy sheets, I buy at least one extra set of pillow cases, usually two. The sheets last just fine but the pillow cases just don’t. It’s nice to have spares!!

I like Frette linens, but they are pricey. I only buy them for the master bedroom. I recently found Frette sheet sets on Rue La La. Last set I got on Rue La La was just over $200–regular price was around $500. For the other bedrooms, I usually order sheets from Cuddledown or Garnet Hill. Both have nice selections of good quality sheets. Garnet Hill has great flannel sheets. I love them; my H hates them–says it’s like sleeping in velcro.

We usually get sheets at Tuesday Morning. I look for the highest thread count available for our mattress size that will go with our comforter (which has several colors in it). I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $50, which includes top sheet, fitted bottom sheet, and 2 pillow cases. I purchase 300+ thread count.

My D loves her Pure Beech Jersey Knit Sheets from Bed, Bath and Beyond. She never pays retail for ANYTHING but she splurged on them ($35) with a gift card she got for HS graduation. She’s used them for 2 years now and still loves them. She is very particular about her bedding.

There is a difference between Sferra or Frette and Pottery Barn linens, just like there is a difference between a Hyundai and a BMW, or whatever. Both get the job done, to be sure, but if you can afford it and if you appreciate quality, fine linens are sublime, although certainly not worth going into debt to purchase. I buy the kid’s linens at Garnet Hill, which has great products, and I splurge on the master bedroom. However, I bought my son Sferra towels on sale about ten years ago and they are still soft and fluffy, unlike the Polo towels I bought for the other bathrooms, which are now rough and need to be replaced. My advice is to buy the best you can afford, but know what you are buying.

Gourmetmom - I do like it that you posted youre Sferra suggestion. There are folks that can justify that kind of spending (maybe even me someday). Different folks have varying budgets and varying priorities.

Thanks also for mentioning Garnet Hill. That’s a new site to me - looks interesting.

I definitely like the idea of having fewer but nicer sets of sheets. Two sets is plenty and minimizes storage. Having said that, I’m on the fence about giving away our third king set (since it is already bought and paid for)… but ha, that’s a topic for the de-cluttering threads ;)

We were able to get some amazing 600 or 800 thread count sheets at Ross & have been spoiled for anything with lower threadcount. I love how soft it is & NEVER pills. Jersey seems to pill like crazy, so it’s never been anything we or the kids have been interested in. I always look over what they have at Ross, just in case there are any more as soft, but haven’t found it since!

I have tried buying sheets at Marshalls and TJMaxx with high thread counts but dh and I tend to find them ‘slippery’. We like soft sheets but, I think I’ve figured out that we don’t like sheets that are called ‘sateen’. I’m still trying to figure it out but, if anyone can shed light on soft vs. ‘slippery’ (not sure if people will know what I mean), let me know. They are all 100% cotton and have been varying thread counts.

SIX HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THREE dollares (plus shipping) for a set of queen sheets???

Wow - one sure could help a lot of hungry, sick, or homeless people or refugees with that kind of money…

I’ve done great at tues morn for sheets. Son got very spoiled. Now that he;s moved back into dorm, I couldn’t find anything in twinXL except at bloomis. Quite pricey. Still, son washes and reuses, and hasn’t opened his LLBean set. Me, I like my white flannel sheets. Thw worm also likes clothes that are soft. I haven’t shown him Frette sheets yet: guess that will come when he settle down. What are Sferre sheets like?
