So a friend and I took a third/mutual friend out for her birthday, and elected to sit out on the patio. Yours truly got stung by a bee. I am not allergic so no anaphalactic reaction/need for epipen, but it hurts like heck. I got the stinger out, and it felt fine as long as I iced it, but now that I am home it really hurts. The waitress decided that the best treatment was bourbon shooters. Didn’t hurt, but didnt help.

I dont seem to have any great topical bug cream treatments at home. I have taken a tylenol and applied baking soda and also tried calamine lotion, but still having major ouchies. Any suggestions (besides still icing it)?

Did you make a paste of the baking soda with water? You need to make a paste and let it dry. They apply Benadryl lotion and take Ibuprofen, not Tylenol. Tylenol is not anti-inflammatory.

thank you, singersmom, for your quick reply.
Actually, I think I took an advil. It isnt swollen, it just hurts, a lot. I’ll try another round of the baking soda paste. The calamine stuff is just runny.

Be sure to take Benadryl orally … don’t just use it topically. Since Benadryl is an antihistamine, it will block the histamine (chemical produced by the body that is triggered when having an allergic reaction). Try taking it every six hours for the next 24 hours or so. Between that and some ibuprofen, it will hopefully feel better soon!

Seriously, solarcaine. It has lidocaine, and the “cooling gel” kind feels great. I got my first bee sting in 09 and my whole arm swelled up and itched and burned, and this was the ONLY thing that helped-- tried it on a whim even though it’s for sunburn because I knew what lidocaine did and it worked like a charm.

Ouch on the hornet, ek! Haven’t tried epsom salts yet (got a big bag of that stuff around here somewhere). Thanks too, splashmom and mowc!
So far - now added:
Topical corticosteroid - check
Oral benadryl- check (willput me to sleep any second now)

Origination of the annoying B- undetermined. Perhaps it is the ghost of cc’ers past, returning with a zero post count, busily pm’ing posters to tell them the supposed “inside scoop”.

Hope you feel better soon. If you are not allergic, you don’t have much to worry about. Have some wine, you should better in the morning. I stepped on a bee’s nest while carrying D2 when she was less than a year old, we were both stung by I don’t know how many bees. D2 is still terrified of anything which buzzes or moves.

DH just told me that last week when he was stung by a whole nest that came down in a storm, he sprayed with Windex since he did not have other ammonia available. It seemed to help.

Thats clever, singersmom! I forgot about the ammonia before I headed out this morning. I put cortisone cream and a bandaid on it. It still hurts :(
