Before you post: CMU FAQ

I couldn’t visit, but I had an interview and wrote the interview essay,; would it look bad that I didn’t show enough interest?

I think an interview is very important if you can’t visit. Also, they understand that it is economically prohibitive for some to visit; it’s looked at context. If your zip code is Greenwich, CT and you don’t visit? I dunno, I think that will affect your chances (not rule you out by any means, but it will be noted).

I visited recently with my son and admissions is not shy, especially one on one, in talking about how important demonstrated interest is. I was aware that it was a factor, but not until that visit did it really sink in. At one point, the admissions rep pointed to the SCS stats (low yield) and said “we don’t like that!” They were just more upfront about it than I expected.

@Selena731‌ Besides rigor of SCS, and difficulty in transferring, how likely is one (if you have specific statistics that’d be great) to get accepted after fulfilling the requirements?

Also just to clarify, even if you double major (with original major in a non-SCS school), your degree won’t be granted from the SCS right?

What if you signed up for an interview but were never contacted?

@Predent: I think that counts as demonstrated interest. Good luck!

We just attended an info session earlier this month and to set the record straight- HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN YEAR grades do not count against you. The ad counselor specifically said that they consider it an adjustment year. Now, if you did very well and continue to do well then perhaps they also take this into account.

I definitely discussed Andrew Carnegie in my essay (and even quoted him) and got in.

I want to go to CMU for engineering, but am doubtful I can get in. Should I just apply to dietrich and then transfer?

No, that’s not a good idea, @c0llegegirl. For engineering, you need to take two intro engineering courses your freshman year. You have no guarantees that you could get into either/both of these as a Dietrich student. Apply engineering and see what happens.

So I’ve gotten into the College of Engineering ED, and want to get a minor in fine arts (HOPEFULLY!!!), but I’m not really sure how to apply for a minor…? Can I apply for that minor when I’m attending the college next year?

Haven’t been on the forum in a while! (School picked up, it seems  )
Everyone: definitely trust what admission officers say, things have been changing every year here at CMU with admission, curriculum and structure.

@Mmmmmd Congrats! You can pretty much minor in anything you want, you would just have to talk to your CIT advisor. In addition, check out this site: https://www.cmu.edu/art/programs/minor.html

@Selena731 Thanks for the reply!

@Selena731 this is most likely a question you can’t answer, but it’s worth a try. Would you happened to have any idea what the acceptance rate is like at Dietrich? I’d imagine it’s higher, because CMU isn’t very well known for the humanities or social sciences. I’m looking to apply for fall transfer from a community college with a less-then-stellar high school performance and a near-perfect college gpa/good extracurriculars etc.

Im hoping to double in a social science and statistics, but I figured my chances would be better if I applied to Dietrich for admission. Do you know anything about the admission competition at Dietrich, or anyone who has successfully matriculated there?

Just want to figure out if CMU’s application is worth my time and money.

@thenarddog1 I don’t know about transfers, but the acceptance rate for Dietrich is 27% for freshman applicants. Source: http://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/undergraduate-admission-statistics

@selena371 I’m a junior, and by the time I apply, I will most likely have a 3.5 UW gpa (4.15ish weighted). I have taken the hardest classes possible every single year in high school (2 math classes in 9th grade, 2 science classes in 10th grade, IB full diploma in 11th (even though 3 of our 6 classes in IB are supposed to be higher level, I am taking 5 Higher level classes, which is extremely difficult. I am 1 of 3 students in a class of 100 doing this). I know my gpa is extremely weak for CMU, but how much would my class rigor make up for it? Also, I currently have a 35 ACT and am in the running for national merit (definitely will get commended, good chance for SF/F). I play a leadership role on varsity and junior varsity soccer (3rd year), have placed 3rd and 5th at regional debate tournaments in just my first year doing it, qualified for the national geography olympiad as well as history bowl, got 2nd in regional history bowl, was captain of knowledge bowl B team (2 years), MUN (3 years), tutoring (1 year), soccer volunteering (1 year), Harvard Summer School (scored in the top 15% for each of the two classes I took there, got 8 college credits), Advanced Space Academy attendee (1 week, earned 1 college credit), was in Robotics for 2 years, am secretary of Badminton club, NHS inductee, and a school ambassador. My GPA worries me alot…but I’m really unclear because I know my GPA is significantly lower than CMU’s standard, but at the same time my standardized test scores are higher than the CMU 75th% percentile.. Could you help me get a clearer understanding of my situation? I will most likely try to attend CMU’s pre college in the summer, get an interview there, and apply early decision when November comes around. Thank you so much!

@mkumar17. If it helps: Did you know CMU recalculates your GPA without freshman year?

My GPA is worse without freshman year  @veggylover

Does anyone have information about the BHA program? The website says 81 units are required for the Dietrich concentration, which translates to only 9 courses (since I would concentrate in econ and most econ courses are 9 units). Can it really be that low?

Hey ! Just a question ! Do you have any information about Carnegie Mellon at Qatar Campus ? Because I’m planning to apply there

hey, can anyone tell me how competitive the interdisciplinary programs are? Computational Finance or Computational Biology?
I am talking about applying as a first year student

Thx
