Need input from you experienced golfers out there! Looking for golf clubs for beginners with good quality and reasonable price. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I had exactly the same question a few weeks ago:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1009183-gigagolf-clubs-any-experience.html?highlight=giga

There are quite a few suggestions in that thread. I was looking for clubs for S2, 12 years old; not sure whether you want clubs for yourself or a chld. I did end up getting 6 clubs from Gigagolf, and my son loves them. He says that they improved his game instantly. The people there are very helpful in recommending club heads, shaft type/length, grip, flex, etc. The cost was under $30/club. They came fast, and there is a 30-day return or adjustment period.

Thanks NYMom, I’ll check out the link. I am looking at clubs for both adults and kids.

When my 24 year old son began playing, we ended up with a set from Costco. With Costco’s return policy, it was a great deal for us. I even asked the manager how long we would have to return the set if he didn’t like them, and his response was forever! It has been 2 years and I still have the receipt on my bulletin board just in case. One of the clubs has a defect and when my son went to try to just exchange that club, he was told he had to return the entire set; they would refund the set and then he could buy another. He didn’t want to unpack his entire bag, so we bought a new set first and then returned the full new set except for the club to replace his defected one. We just slipped the bad club in the bag of new clubs and showed them the defect.

Thanks. I am looking into the offerings by Costco. I wonder for beginners which set would be better and/or reasonable.

What I liked about Gigagolf is that you could buy the clubs individually. For example, I only bought 3 irons, while an iron set usually consists of 8. Beginning players cannot use the low-numbered irons, apparently. You can also customize the flex (more flexibility for beginners, I believe), length, etc., based on a few body measurements and your level of play. S2 has ladies’ clubs cut down 1/2".

I got my beginner golf clubs (years ago) from my club’s Golf Pro. They always have “trade-ins” from members who have recently upgraded. Quality clubs and they will cut them to size for you/your kids; make sure you don’t buy too stiff a shaft, etc. You can also try them out on the range. If you don’t belong to a Club, you can still go to a local course with a quality golf shop. Used clubs are a good price deal.

Note that if you are buying for a teen (maybe even tween) boy (possibly a girl, too), many of them will be name-brand conscious. You don’t necessarily need to accommodate that personality trait, lol, but if your giftee fits this profile, you’ll find them appreciating what you get them more if it’s a currently popular brand rather than a no-name. You would not believe how 12 and 13-year old boys who’ve never played golf ogle each others’ clubs to see who’s playing “what.”
