being an asian in the south

describe the southern atmosphere of chapel hill to an asian from nj.

The 2007 class is ~8% Asian (undergraduates). I think around 7-8% has been average over the last several years. Chapel Hill and the RTP area, including Raleigh and Durham, have a strong Asian presence. This is mainly due to the 3 major universities in the area (Duke, UNC, NCSU), and the industries housed at RTP.

Chapel Hill is a town (not a city), and is, for the most part, well-heeled, well-educated, and cosmopolitan. Since the town was built around the University, everyone seems very tolerant and accepting of the students (from my viewpoint-- students might feel differently?). The campus is right in town, so not isolated. It’s a viable, lively town, not overpriced (lots of affordable places for students to eat, hang out). Again, this is from my perspective as an adult; current students may feel differently.

Better than NJ.
