Being in top ten really that much help?

I’m looking through all of these threads on CC, and it seems being in the top ten percent of your school makes you stand out like stains on white. So how much of a booster can it really be? Do universities look at whether your school is full of idiots and consider how hard it is to be top ten in your H.S?

around 85% are in the top 10% of their school. so no, it does not make you stand out.

I’m pretty sure he means top 10 individuals, not top 10 percent…

Read it again dfleish.

And, top 10% won’t make you stand out, but not being top 10% will. So that is more what they are refering to.

i’m going to go ahead and be the first to say… yes. If you go to a ****ty high school top colleges will probably really prefer that you were in the top 1 or 2%.

on the other hand, if you go to a competitive magnet school or elite private school, admissions officers are probably more willing to search deeper into the class rankings

just my speculation, but it makes sense, and you can see some evidence of it just by looking at anecdotal cases around these boards.

Haha oops. My bad
