Being Sick

If a student gets sick enough to need medical attention while at NU, is there an infirmary or a health center on campus? Where do you get prescriptions filled?

Parent question…

Thanks.

There’s two main places students go. One is searle hall, where theres a small clinic. If you have to take a tb test, etc. when you get to campus, you’ll do it there. It’s in south campus between plex and the sorority quads.

For more serious injuries/illnesses, you will go to Evanston Northwestern Hospital (i’m hoping this is the right one). This is somewhere between ryan field and the main northwestern campus.

Prescriptions can be filled in downtown evanston, CVS is a good place to start looking

FYI, if you’re a girl and you go to Searle for a headache, they will ask you if you are pregnant.

I went there when I burned my hand from oil spilling out of my popcorn maker (smooth!) and their first question… “are you pregnant?”

I went to Searle when I had mono and their second question… “are you sure you’re not pregnant?”

When I first got sick (a severe allergic reaction to midwestern allergens in the fall), I was terrified that I couldn’t get quality medical care. Searle operates far closer to a real doctor’s office than I would’ve imagined. It has multiple rooms and is equipped to deal with most mainstream ailments. However, if you have to go the hospital, DO NOT take an ambulance. Supposedly, Searle likes to get ambulances for those that require hospitalization, which costs hundreds of dollars. If you’re sick and need a ride to the hospital, take the $10 cab ride.

searle is fine, but i would recommend finding a GP in evanston, since you’ll be there for a while. i got really sick this past year a number of times and used both searle and ENH. my experiences with ENH itself were not that great, but I’ve had good experience witih doctors in the ENH network. my situation is a bit different since i have a chronic condition, but it’s a good idea, especially if you have good outside insurance.

Mm, how does the school insurance work?
Because I have to enroll in it, lol.
So do I just go on CAESAR and mark “yes, I will enroll blahblah” and the school bills me later?
