Belmont High To Use Breathalyzers On Students Suspected Of Drinking At School Events

“Belmont High administrators may soon be able to perform breathalyzer tests on students if they suspect they are drunk at school events.” …

Will teachers and administrators be tested too?

I don’t think using breathalyzers before dances is all that unusual around here in Massachusetts (and maybe elsewhere). I know they were used on all the students before DS’11’s junior and senior proms. At DD’ 14’s school (different high school), they do random tests before school dances. I think I heard on the news that they were going to be used in school if a student was suspected of drinking and that struck me as more unusual and maybe why it’s making news.

They were using breathalyzers back when I was in high school before school dances…they were used on people ‘suspected of being drunk’ not everyone.

At prom our high schoolers are well aware that our principal will greet each person by name at the front door and give them a great, big welcoming hug. All while very openly smelling their breath and looking for signs of drinking/ drugs. Our human breathalyzer is a dynamo who knows every kid in the school, and is not afraid to deny entry. The kids know it. She is beloved by students and parents alike.

^That was how my high school was - I remember having to shake hands with the dean of students in order to enter prom

In any case, when I graduated in 2010, my high school was one of few to NOT use breathalyzers at school events, even in liberal San Francisco.

Good. My prom was pretty much ruined by all the drunks/stoned people (including most of my friends). BORING.

When they identify a student who has been drinking they ought to call the student’s parents to come pick the student up and at least give the parents a sniff test.

In Mass can a parent provide his or her underage child alcohol in the parent’s presence?
