RIP Bhutto. I guess the opposition will be unified under Sharif now. I wonder if it was the military or Islamic militants in western Pakistan.

I’m guessing military. Islamic militants would have been perfectly happy with a divided country. (of course, they might decide to take credit for it in any case.)

I would lay odds that it was the intelligence service of the military which has a life of its own even beyond Musharraf and it looks like are the power really behind the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Very disturbing event. Not good. :(

TERRIBLE news. But really, I expected it. Wasn’t there an attempt on her life where they blew up 140 people but she survived a couple of months ago?

This isn’t good at all… may she rest in peace.

Like Beef above, I honestly also feared this was inevitable, particularly after the attempt in October, which I think happened not a day or so after she came out of exile. It’s shocking nevertheless. She gave an interview recently, speaking about the risk, being fully aware of the danger to her life, speaking about the fact she had children but that her consideration of Pakistan’s children and their future was as high a priority for her. It’s terrible.

Benazir Bhutto, Harvard Class of '73. R.I.P.

Horrible news.

Pakistan has long been my choice of most problematic country with respect to both stability and US interests (not always the same thing).

Pakistan > Afghanistan > N. Korea > Iraq > Iran

You can argue about switching the last two.

I am waiting for the other shoe to drop: either Musharraf is assassinated or he flees the country.

It is awful, depressing. I was half expecting it after the last attempt. She must have known that this was very likely, almost inevitable. She has a lot more courage than I do.

I think her daughter is/was at Harvard too.
