what are the benefits of joining a fraternity or soroity in college?

The exact benefits are going to vary from campus to campus (ie, campus involvement on a campus where greeks run everything is going to be huge, but non existent where greeks do nothing)…but in general:

supportive environment, way to meet lots of new people, alumni connections, making a large number of REALLY close friends (I had 24 guys in my pledge class), mentoring, community service opportunities, better food (if the chapter has a house), often times living in is cheaper, leadership seminars and events open only to Greeks (ie the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute), unique bond with people you’ve never met across the country, generally better social life, leadership positions (someone has to help run the chapter).

People will argue that if you search out the right groups on campus, you can get all of these things, but to that I say the Greek system is the only place where you get them all in one package.
