Berekeley "Shark Tank"

im kinda new to the whole “cal” thing since i live in new york but i wat to eventually attend grad school here. im goin to Brown for undergrad to find out exactly what i want to do. im like 95 percent sure that i want to do something in engineering or applied math. from what ive heard berekley is one of the best in these fields on the grad level. and its in cali, a place where ive always wanted to be.
but some of the negatives ive been hearing about berekley is that is very fierce and competitive, like a shark tank…can you guys attest to this?

All of the top 20 Unis are.

Got close.

jeez give a guy a break will ya?

Welcome to the shark tank. ;)

Clearly, you’re not ready for the Berkeley shark tank.

i can see that. even the forum is cutthroat. this is unbelievable.

“Welcome to the shark tank.”
HAHA, so true.

it’s okay, OP, just make sure you’re super careful when u type from now on ;)

haha thank you, i definitely will be. this is the type of thing i have not seen in the Brown forum whatsoever.

I hope you realize this is all out of jest. We’re not hostile, and Berkeley definitely isn’t as cutthroat as it’s put out to be, especially its graduate school. Grad students are very very well taken care of and the classes are tailored to help you with your Ph.D/masters thesis and corresponding research.

Isn’t it a bit early to be thinking of grad school?

I don’t think you should judge our school if you can’t even spell it correctly.

What? The shark tank thing does not apply to the math graduate program, I can guarantee that much. The students are friendly and often look out for each other. And yes, that program is exceptional. The only thing about the math program is there is a preliminary exam you have to pass, and that can be hard. Earlier in the day the grad program used to overadmit, sort of like the undergrad one, and flunk people out with the prelim. Not true anymore, as the admission is superselective, and things like letters of recommendation play a big role. Good luck, and enjoy Brown, it’s a wonderful place.
