Berkeley Admissions: Numbers Based?

Is admission to Berkeley highly dependent on SAT scores and GPA, or are the essays an important factor as well?
I know that in my home state’s flagship school, admission is completely dependent on the number so I was wondering how Berkeley does it…

essays are crucial

yeah, number will always be there and get you considered but your essay is what gets you in.

Actually, I have to disagree; however, as an OOS you should have great essays. My essays were horrendous, but I got into Berkeley as an in-state student. Don’t take the same risk as I took, though. With good essays, a person without many ECs and a good academic record, can get into Berkeley. Good essays also help with scholarships committees, such as Regents and Chancellors.

Being a minority and stating that in your personal statement helps a ton too.

Numbers are an easy way for colleges to gauge a student. However, colleges take into account ECs and essays as well.

I have a feeling that if your stats aren’t so hot but your ECs and essays are awesome, they might let you in spring admit.

Berkeley admissions is A LOT more number based than Ivies and Ivy-level schools. Especially if you are in state. Essay counts but you still will get in if you are brilliant (with test scores and grades to prove it) and you happened to write a mediocre essay.

Does anybody know how Regents and Chancellors and other merit-based aid works?
