I’ve been accepted to Cal (spring) and the Naval Academy in Annapolis but I cannot decide which school to go to.

Navy has great athletics, great companionship, small classes, its free, and travel opportunities. But it has limited majors (22) and the military requirements can get exhausting.

Cal has the reputation, San Fran, great professors, travel opportunities, and a wide variety of majors and course. But Cal also has huge classes, is super competitive, and its hard to get into classes that you want.

Anyone have any advice for a severely torn high school senior??

This is two totally different directions in life. If you don’t feel in your heart the call to serve you won’t last at USNA. This is a question only you can answer.

Do you want to be an officer in the Navy?

Service Academies are a different breed than most colleges. Whether they are a good choice depends on your motivations and priorities.

Both are good schools, but they are very different schools.

I realize they are schools on the opposite ends of the spectrum…which is why it is a difficult decision for me.

My main motivation in life has not been to become a Naval officer, but I believe that if I went to the Academy the passion would be contagious.

I’m not looking for an answer to which school i should go to…Im looking for feedback on the two schools…good and bad.

I would definitely recommend visiting both…

Service Academies are good at giving people a huge work load. It’s not all academics. You will be expected and required to do military duties and athletics. I once charted out the “expected” times for all my daily activities. It worked out to about 25.5 hours per day.
SA cadets/mids have a lot more rules to live under vs. the average student, but they also get a lot of unique experiences and opportunities.

Being a Naval/Marine officer doesn’t need to be your main motivation in life to be happy at USNA, but it should probably rank fairly high on your list.

My brother is a sophomore right now at USNA

it is hell your entire plebe year.
If you don’t want to do it or if you are doing it for your parents, you won’t last through the summer.
But hey, he loves it. He is double majoring in physics. Guaranteed an awesome job after graduation and “free” schooling

I’m going to Cal in the fall, personally.

Wow. this is a tough one. But do check out the ROTC program before you decide. The two schools has such a different culture that…I don’t feel like I can make a recommendation until I know more about your personality and passion. But yeah, in your final decision…ask what you want to do, and how you want to spend your college doing?
