Hey, I am planning on applying to Berkeley next cycle and I want to know what prerequisites I need. I am an international student, and I am attending a 4 year college in Florida. I am planning on applying for a philosophy major and I have no idea of what the requirements are for the prereqs and general eds (specifically for the science courses)…

I already checked IGETC and ASSIST but some of the things they say are either contradictory or do not apply to international students.

By the time I am done with my sophomore year of college I should be done with

MATHS- elementary algebra, college algebra, precalc/trig, calculus for business OR stats (or maybe I won’t even bother taking a maths course after precalc next semester?)
ENGLISH- standard college Writing composition 1st semester, standard college Writing composition 2nd semester. (I don’t need to take the TOEFL because my first language is English etc)
FOREIGN LANGUAGE- I don’t have any, but I took higher level IB French in highschool so that should satisfy my foregin language prereq right?
SOCIAL SCIENCE- Intro to sociology, intro to macroeconomics, intro to microeconomics, Global Issues, Intro to philosophy, Ethics, Ancient philosophy. (Do I need to take a social sciences course focusing on America?? If so, please let me know…)
SCIENCE- Intro to astronomy (this is not a lab science), I also plan on taking environmental science or chemistry and society (neither of which have labs), Do I need to take a lab science or not?? because if I do, then I guess I should change something up here.
MISCELLANEOUS- Speech, general ITM (computer skills), survey of wold theater (art & writing intensive)

Courses specific to philosophy- I already mentioned ethics, intro to philosophy and ancient philosophy, but I also plan on taking logic.

Does it look like I need anything else? the places I am most worried about are the philosophy department and science department (I also dunno whether or not I need an American history or if the social sciences I have are good enough).

Here’s basically how the course listings look so far. (please not that I have already took IB FRENCH higher level that should complete the foreign language requirement. Anything you see that should change sophomore year (note I do have an interest in economics and if I stay here I do plan on taking an economics minor)

CALL the counselors at Cal directly and tell them all you just said. They’ll tell you whether the classes are transferable and if you have all the prereq’s. I’m in the same boat as you, OOS International, and I just got rejected from UCLA cause I assumed my english classes were tranferable, which they weren’t, which lead to an automatic denial. I have a 4.0 and all the other prereq’s complete. So, I honestly thought I had a good chance. My point is, COMPLETE EVERYTHING they ask you. Triple check with Berkeley’s counselors that everything applies. Give them NO excuse to deny you and you “should” be fine. Thing is for OOS students it’s always a crap shoot.

Oh, and btw, Cal has some forms you can have your english teachers fill out with the course descriptions and stuff which you can send directly to their evaluation unit to QUADRUPLE check that they work. If they do, SAY SO IN YOUR APP!
