Berkeley vs UCSD

Hello everyone! I really need some help. I got into both Berkeley and UCSD for bioengineering (off the waitlist for Berkeley so I’m short on time for a decision), and I’m seriously considering going in the pre-med direction. I’ve visited both schools for Triton Day and Cal Day. Also, I’m instate so price is relatively the same. Here are some things I’m considering for both schools:

Berkeley:

  • renowned faculty
  • higher percentage of students get into med schools
  • I absolutely loved the campus (immediately felt a connection when i visited)
  • I absolutely love NorCal
  • a lot of biotech companies in the bay area
  • higher prestige (and i know that doesn’t do much for med school apps)
  • notorious for grade deflation so lower gpa and lower chances for med school
  • socially vibrant ie. over 1000 clubs to participate in
  • students were really outgoing and lively
  • more outlets if stressed (hikes/botanical gardens)

UCSD - John Muir College

  • two hospitals on campus
  • over 300 businesses in the area that willingly want undergrads for internships
  • have the option to go back to my original major after even after switching
  • getting a higher gpa will be (slightly) easier
  • I hate SoCal and not a huge fan of the beach
  • atmosphere is really mellow (hardly any clubs being endorsed when at Triton Day compared to Cal Day) which appeal to me at all

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Did you notice that the school is not right on the beach? Gotta take a car or a good hike to get down the cliff to the beach. Most days are overcast, you won't notice the beach.
Re: the clubs, that's the norm hence the name UC for the SD. Go to Cal because you felt the fit.
