Besides financial aid, what do we miss out on in terms of opportunities, merit scholarships or advantages by not completing the FAFSA?

Looking for feedback re: not completing FAFSA.

If you don’t complete FAFSA you will not receive any federal aid like Pell grant, SEOG, loans, and some other grants (NASA? Department of Defense?) or scholarships that require FAFSA. Period. You have to complete the FAFSA to get federal aid even if it is awarded by the school (SEOG).

Some schools use the FAFSA to award school money for need based aid, merit scholarships (which may or may not have a need component). That’s up to the school. Some schools also use the FAFSA as proof you are a citizen or green card holder. If you don’t file, they can ask for proof of your status.

Adding to @twoinanddone ^ If you don’t fill out the FAFSA for the first Freshman year, you will miss out for future years of funding. Freshman receive the best aid and future budgeting from the FA office.
Things do happen in our lives where we have no control. Parents lose jobs, become ill, deal with grandparent nursing home costs, have accidents, deal with fires and floods, lose investments, etc.
You can’t plan on everything staying the same such that you might not need funding in the future.

We don’t qualify for any need based aid but I’ve still always filed FAFSA just because/just in case. I do believe that when DD’19’s college got CARES Act money, they divided it among those that filed FAFSA. DD got $450.

Thanks!

I hear you, thanks!

Ok thanks.
