Hmmm more apps to think about. Does mighty text work better than the mike on the iPhone 5? I find it frustrating to dictate more than very short phrases because of the mistakes. Maybe I need suction lessons. Sigh

I have an android but there are a lot of the same apps. I just want to say that at my school, snapchat is used a LOT. However, all my friends use it appropriately, and all 200 or so of the ones I’ve sent I would have just as willingly opened with my mom watching. Of course some teenagers are still idiots… ever heard of screenshots… but whatever.

Just downloaded Out of Milk, thanks for the tip!

On my iPhone5:

Inrix - traffic alert system (awesome)
Google Maps
Gas Buddy
Facebook
LinkedIn
Youtube
PDF Reader
Accuweather
Weather Underground
College Confidential
Angry Birds everything ($)
Fragger (game) ($)
Battery Doctor ($)
Backgammon NJ ($$$ but worth it)
DD1’s university app (includes map, news, etc)
MyAT&T
The Simpsons Game

Coming Soon: more games

How about any apps (preferably free) about constellations? If you paid, was it worth it? How much did it cost.

Making your iPhone a hotspot does sound appealing, especially in a pinch. Anyone know what the app is called for iPhone 5?

[How to Use Personal Hotspot on iOS 6 and the iPhone 5](How to Use Personal Hotspot on iOS 6 and the iPhone 5)

HIMom, I found these instructions online for setting up the hotspot.

has anyone mentioned app for CC?

i also use home depot
viber
skype
qr reader
netflix
costco

and many bank apps that can scan a check to deposit

Lakemom–yes, the texting shows up on your phone for Mighty Text. I just downloaded it last night. It’s pretty cool. My phone address book downloaded to my computer too and it has a list of the most recent texting on the side, just like my phone. I sent a text to someone that wasn’t on that short list, just started typing the name and it showed up. Downloaded the photos I have on my phone of them too.

HImom–PDANet is for both Android and IPhone–the developer is June Fabrics. I’ve had the app for over 2 years. I LOVE it.

I have Goggle Sky Map on my phone for constellations. Not sure if it’s available for Iphones though.

steveMa,

That PDAnet is not available on iphone. I cannot find it in apple app store. I wish I can make a hot spot on iphone bypassing the provider

[June Fabrics PDA Technology Group](http://www.junefabrics.com/)

Link to the developer’s site. I am NOT affiliated with them in any way other than having their app on my phone :D.

Find iPhone is a must have! We use it to find each others phones on busy mornings. It sounds an alert even when the phone or iPad is on vibrate. And you can remotely wipe or lock your iPhone/iPad if it is really lost.

I search the net and found the followings about using iphone as hot spot but you may get caught and pay for it anyway.

I am sure sprint watch it as a hawk, it is a big revenue for them

Thanks for your reply SteveMA.

As best as I can tell reading about texting from computers, you have to have an android/iphone or some type of data plan with your phone.

I do not have a data plan with my phone, it is an old Pantech that I just use as a phone. Texting requires stepping through all the letters you don’t want to pick one you do.

I want to text from my Macbook air so that it goes to my son as if it is coming from a smart phone and it would appear on his iPhone in the usual back and forth format.

I have searched and it looks like there is something called ichat that will sent SMS messages to others but I am not tech knowledgeable enough to know it that will work.

Has anyone used ichat?

RL classic - scans bar codes and reports prices; the classic version does NOT automatically report the data to Amazon
Tuner - graphical display of notes to tune your stringed instruments; easy on these old eyes
SoundHound - like Shazam it listens to music and names that tune; better than Shazam because it will listen and respond to your own voice, not just recorded music
HopStop - used it in New York for choosing subway routes; simple to use and surprisingly accurate
Nashville Live Music - great app for finding the music you want in Nash Vegas
wish there were apps this good for NY music
Yelp - with location turned on does a great job of locating the kind of restaurants you are looking for; not sure that the reviews are accurate but the cuisine and pricing info is spot on
Flashlight - bright light when you need it; simple and easy

So, what Calendar app do folks use? I’m trying out Week Cal and like getting the reminders on my email

“maidenMom: snapchat? haha…google it; you’ll see what it’s used for primarily”

OH MY!!! my friend, also middle aged mom who likes gadgets and games, found it and made me install so we could figure it out… haven’t had a lot of use for it - guess I know why now!!!

I have to say I am really loving this Mighty Text app!!!1

re: snapchat. I also noticed when googling that there were ways to secretly save photos and videos. It was only a matter of time…

DH just downloaded Evernote on his Droid and ipad. It allows him to jot down notes on one device and it will show up on the other.

Just downloaded two free apps to view the stars, skyview free and planets. They were the most highly ranked free programs. Will try some of these other apps too.

Seems likely sprint MAY somehow catch and charge you if you use phone as hotspot. Anyone with experience? The bill for our four phones with data will already be high enough!

I think you can turn on the hotspot function in iphone without telling Sprint, they will catch you just like they will catch you with all the other programs. Based on the web site the screen format transmitted is different from laptop/desktop and mobile device, that it how sprint can catch you.

I did not read the contract fully yet, but there might be some penalty if you got caught using the phone not according to the agreement.
