Best Apps for iPhone? (Preferably free)

OK, we’re still getting to know our new iPhones, which we got in late December. What are your favorite Apps and why?

So far, I like the following:
CardMunch (they have someone actually transcribe information when you send them a photo of a business card)
TED (with TED conferences)
BBC News (love listening to BBC programs)
Red Laser
I Heart Radio (like that there are hardly any ads & large selection of stations)

Thanks for your suggestions. So far, have not installed many apps on the phone that I actually use.

Gasbuddy.

It is an app that searches for the cheapest gas near your current location or any location you choose. We did a lot of driving last year with a 1200 mile round trip to Houston every other week for my husband’s medical treatments. It surprised us how large the price differences can be within a short distance of each other. We use it a lot.

Flashlight

justWink (free email/phone greeting cards to send - very cute)

Badly Drawn Faces (a guessing game - great for when you’re waiting for seating in a restaurant, etc.)

GasBuddy - shows nearby gas prices at your current location

PrinterPro - allows you to print from your iPhone, iPad

All the social networks: FB, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.

This weekend I downloaded Spotify on my iPad/iPhone - as far as I can tell it’s a step up from Pandora - you can search an artist’s album and listen to it all for free. They also give you a 48 free subscription to download songs onto a Spotify playlist - I have been trying to make up a new playlist this weekend so I’ll have some new tunes to listen to when running!

Games - Ruzzle is a fast paced, timed word game.

Snapchat - not sure about this yet, but it allows you to send a photo to someone and choose how many seconds they can view it before it self destructs.

Reddit - a good way to pass time while waiting for anything.

Out of Milk–it’s a grocery store app where you can scan the bar code of what you buy and it stores that information so you can make grocery lists from that, so as you throw out the jar of peanut butter and need to add it to the list, you just scan the bar code and it’s on the list for your shopping trip.

I also like PDANet from June Fabrics. It’s a wi-fi hot spot on your phone so if you don’t have internet access you can tether your computer phone or connect via bluetooth and get on the internet. It’s wonderful for long car trips. It’s a one time $15 charge for the app. I use it in hotels that charge for internet access too.

Shazam (“listens” to a song for 30 seconds and tells you the artist, album, etc.)
Words With Friends
Pandora
Flashlight
Kindle
Hipstamatic

Can’t remember if it was free but it was at least low cost…I like Evernote - I like it because I can download it on all my devices - even my work desktop and laptop and it syncs to all my devices - so if I create a list at work, it will be accessible on all my devices. You can save many types of files to it.

Cardstar…keeps your rewards and membership cards, so you don’t need in your wallet.
I have all my drug/grocery/retail rewards cards, my airline membership cards, AAA, etc. on this app…

Any good apps for keeping organzing with the college admissions process? instead of using an excel spread sheet?

Thanks for these suggestions–have Shazam loaded but haven’t heard any songs recently so haven’t yet used it.

Two of my favorites:
AroundMe - lets you find restaurants, banks, coffee shops, etc. near your current location.
WeChat - allow you to text and voice message others with the same app using the internet, thus if you have an unlimited plan it is free and unlimited. For me this is particularly useful to text people in other countries.

maidenMom: snapchat? haha…google it; you’ll see what it’s used for primarily

I like:

yelp
toodledo (actually might work for college apps; never thought of it!)
weather channel
amazon
hopstop
NBC News (or any other network of your choosing)
Google maps (obsessed with the live traffic feature)

Pandora may be free, but if you’re streaming away from a wifi connection, it can be a huge data suck. Not a problem on an unlimited data plan.

I like IMDb - gives you movie info and show times from anyplace.
CC has an ap. not the greatest, but quicker than safari if you’re using your phone.
Weather channel

I recently downloaded Mighty Text to my computer, it syncs with my phone so I can text from my computer and all the texts are still showing on my phone in the history, but when I am working I can text back to my kids without pulling out my phone. For me, it is way faster and fewer typos!

somemom–handy little app. I just installed it for my Droid. Thanks!!

somemom, I am interested in Mighty Text. I like to text from my computer to my son’s iphone but when you text from computer versus a phone, the sender appears to the receiver as numbers eg 144567845.

Now that isn’t so much a problem since he always knows its me but each time I reply it makes a new text on his phone instead of the back and forth that occurs if I text from my phone. He hates that.

Texting from my phone is a pain since it is the old fashion kind so I have to step through the letter to send messages.

When you use Mighty text does is make the texts go back and forth as if I was texting from my phone?

Just added three APPs from this thread! Now I can show my DH that I am not just waisting time!

There is a free app called Run Pee. Gives you a synopsis of a movie and tells you when is the best time to leave the movie to go to the restroom! I just used it when watching the movie Les Miserable!

HiMom–since you said you just got the phone in Dec, I am hoping that you have the Google map app but if you do not, download that and hide the Apple map app. BAD.

As many others have said, Shazam is fun and flashlight can be very useful. Someone mentioned an app to have your phone function as a mobile hot spot. Unless I am mistaken, Apple has had that for at least three generations. I lose track of all the different names and numbers, but I think we had that going back as far as the 3GS and have had it on two newer versions since. It is not blazing fast but convenient at times.

Not one I use frequently, but iHandy Level is very useful when needed. Lets your iphone act as a level, for hanging pictures, etc.
