Best Art School Ever

what is the most prostigious art school/program in the nation? my brother is kind of looking into it. I’m looking for the equivelant of HYPSM of art schools. google search “best art school” just brings up these wierd ITT-Tech-like schools.

thnx :)

Hmm. Rather hard because it depends on the medium. But, I might say Parsons if it’s design. With art school, I’d say NYU/USLA’s art programs for most prestigious.

I have several friends that are hard-core art people, and many of them really want to get into MICA - Maryland Institute of Creative Arts. I’m not sure if you’re brother wants to go to a school with a good art department or an actual full-on art school… because MICA is definitely the latter.

make that Maryland Institute College of Art haha sorry had a brain fart

art institute of chicago, and rhode island school of design will win the most kudos from art snobs. mica is well-respected too.

be sure that it’s the proper art institute OF chicago (vs the art institute IN chicago) you’re looking at, as the latter is just part of an iffy chain-college type thing. if your brother is open to art departments in regular universities, carnegie mellon, virginia commonwealth, yale, brown, and columbia all have excellent art programs.

RISD-Brown
[07-013 (Brown/RISD Joint Degree)](07-013 (Brown/RISD Joint Degree))

thnx for replies

my brother’s medium is drawing and the like…more specifically, pastels. hes good at pastels.

realistically though, getting into these schools is obviously having an outstanding portfolio but what about AP studio art? doing well on the test should make you a more attractive applicant right?

what school would van gogh go to…

As a total non art program, I’d always heard that RISD is the best program (not the RISD-Brown joint program in particular, though that program is obviosuly great for someone who is an outstanding student and artist). I also know that MICA is (or at least was for a while) ranked somewhere as the third best art school in the country, with I think Parsons in second.

If you want to find out more, you might try posting in the section that’s specifically about arts.

Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons, Pratt, San Francisco Art Institute, Art Institute of Chicago.

RISD, SFAI, and Pratt are particularly good.

Cal Arts is very strong, I believe.
[california institute of the arts](http://www.calarts.edu/)

Check out Temple University’s Tyler School of Art

I have little experience in this, but some of my Georgia peers say SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) is rather good.

If you want info from people who know, click the College Discussion link at the top of this page. After the College Discussion page comes up, scroll down and click the Art Schools link under College Majors, then, post the same question.

And now my two cents:

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Maryland Institute of College of Art (MICA) are probably, overall, the best art colleges. Others to look at: SCAD, the School of Visual Arts, Pratt, Massachusetts College of the Arts (MassArts), University of the Arts (UArts), Tyler, Parsons, Cal Arts.

Some regular universities with good art programs: Carnegie Mellon (very well known), Connecticut College, Williams, Virginia Commonwealth, Sarah Lawrence, Bard.

For Architecture, Cornell, Harvard, Unversity of Cincinnati, RICE and CMU and Pratt and a few others.

For Industrial Design, University of Cincinnati, Art Center College of Design, Carnegiel Mellon and RISD and Pratt

For animation: Calarts, Ringling, SCAD,Sheridan ( in Canada), USC , RIT,and a few others.

For Digital Design and New Media: University of Cincinnati, RIT,Pratt (computer art).

For Transportation Design, CCS, University of Cincinnati, Art Center College of Design

For Graphic Design: MANY such as RISD, University of Cincinnati, Pratt, RIT, VCU, and many more

For Fashion: Parsons, FIT, Otis, Pratt, Syracuse University and even University of Cincinnati and others.

For art history: too many to name

For Photography: SAIC, RIT, University of New Mexico, et al.

For painting: MICA, UCLA, and RISD, Monserrat, University of New Mexico atlier schools and many others.

For illustration: RISD, Syracuse University et al.

For Glass: RISD and probably a number of others

Bottom line: There is no one best. It depends on the major.

which are the good schools for film as my d who is a junior in hs wants to major in film…she is attending the pre college program at risd this summer

UCLA, USC, NYU, Columbia apparently have great film programs.

Coincindentally I am also a junior in highshool and I want to major in film, but rather at an art school not a uinivesrity. I am also going to precollege at RISD this summer, but majoring in illustration, though I will major in film when I actually do go to college. What a coincidence!

My top choice would be the RISD/Brown Dual degree program that I am applying early decision to. I’m thinking screenwriting/cultural studies major at brown, and the FAV program at RISD.

I don’t really know where RISD stands in the film school reputation, but there have been quite a few alumnus from their FAV program.
