Best Baby toys

I’m interested in getting an Easter present for my grandchild who will be about six months old. Any of you have experience in the best toy for someone that age? It’s their first child so they only have things like rattles and teethers right now.

My grandson really liked the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy. Toys that babies can crawl to and interact with are good.

Think timeless things like stacking blocks, stacking rings, something musical (no jack in the box!!!), a soft ball for rolling, even outside toys since by Easter weather will be warming up.

I don’t know if Lamaze toys are sold in the U.S. (I’m in Canada) but they have a wonderful selection of well-made , long-lasting, and fun toys for a variety of ages. I’m sure they have newer things now but I recall one of the things I bought for my granddaughter around that age was a pot of musical flowers. When you touched the top of each one, it would play a song. I believed it might have been called the Chime Garden. She loved that toy and now, at age 3 1/2 she has it on the windowseat in her room for decoration. I also got some good soft toys - books, shape sorting toys, rings, all of which are easy for that age group to grip.

I watch a little guy and for his first Easter I bought him a stuffed bunny made by Jelly Cat (so soft) and 2 books. Duck and Goose, a board book which he still loves and he is turning 3 this week and a picture book, The Easter Egg by Jan Brett. The stuffed bunny comes in different sizes and I choose a smaller one so it would be easier for him to hold and play with, and I chose the dark brown color so as not to show the dirt. He takes his bun-bun everywhere and usually by the ear! However, the light gray one is also adorable and is the color of the bunny in the Easter Egg book.

If you want to know what other toys/books/gifts have proved great over the past 3 years just PM me. I watch him 11-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week so I am the one who plays with him and his toys the MOST! (one of his parents is deployed so my family spends a lot of time with his, we are neighbors.)

Kat

The Duck and Goose series also has a Christmas edition and a fall one along with the Easter one. He has them all and you can tell he has really “used” them. I have put away a set for my future grandbabies once I saw how much he really liked them.

Such good suggestions. Thanks. I had heard of Lamaze but not that specific toy so looked it up. Really cute!! I also like the traditional toy idea. Will have to search that Fisher Price Laugh and Learn puppy too. Will be looking into all of these. Hoping to get more of these grandchildren.

I haven’t looked at Discovery Toys lately, but I used to buy their toys for my kids.

I wonder if they still have the Sounds Like Fun recording (now probably on CD). This was wonderful…teaches little ones to count, ABCs, letter sounds, manners, etc. I highly recommend this at some point. 6 months may be too young, but definitely by 12 months. Great to play in the car!!

Edit…found it! Renamed!

If you get it, laminate the card that comes with it…it is super for pre-reading.

OMG, mom2college, we played that cassette tape SOOOOOOOOOO much! I can hear # 3 in my head…“I love you so much, I love you so much, I can’t even tell you how much I love you! You’re special to me, …”

^^
Yup…my kids can still sing those songs. Seriously, I was able to teach them to read VERY easily because they had learned their sounds from "Apple, Apple ah ah ah, Baby, Baby buh buh buh…and so forth.

Cookie, cookie, cu, cu,cu!!

I like simple toys (some better for older babies)

 • stacking cups
 • Tupperway shape toy
 • link set that holds other toys to carriage etc
 • spin rattles

One of the best baby toys was an unbreakable mirror that I put against the back seat for them to look at when they were in a rear facing car seat.

I’ve bought for friends and relatives the Baby Einstein tunnel, and it was a huge hit with both families, and used for a long time.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Baby-Einstein-2-in-1-Safari-Adventure-Gym-and-Tunnel/23267147

I loved that tunnel. Maybe I’ll get him a toy for his house and one for mine.

Sacchi: the description says it’s trilingual. I can’t find where it says how though. Does it talk, or are there words written somewhere? I’m going to assume two of the languages are English and Spanish. Do you know what the third is?

The tupperware shape sorter is a classic. I love anything Fisher Price.

Is this in reference to the tunnel? I don’t think it has any words or sounds. Maybe it is just referring to the instruction manual for setting up the tunnel being in three languages?

Nope. This is from the description:

It mixes in real-life imagery with vivid colors and three languages to enhance baby’s sense of discovery

I was trying to figure out where the languages were too. I can’t image that description refers to the instruction manual but stranger things have happened.

I am fortunate to have three young nephews in my life: 5, 2, and 5 months old. This means I get to “practice” being a grandmother, and I get to buy toys for young children. I’ve always been that “aunt,” the one that gets “educational” toys. There is some really cool stuff online at a site called fatbraintoys. Also a company called Melissa and Doug have some pretty neat stuff. I tend to buy things that are multipurpose and can grow with them. At Christmas the baby was just a few months old, I bought something called the Skwish Classic. (google it) My son had this as a baby. Even my husband and I played with it at times. It’s kind of like a giant squeesh ball for stress relief. It’s one of the few toys I’ve kept from his baby days.
