I’m thinking about going to boarding school in Australia, but I don’t know where to look, since there really aren’t any rankings and it’s hard to find the good ones based on their websites. I’m a girl and I’m looking for either all-girls or coed, I’m looking for the best schools (highest level) and I’d prefer that it wasn’t really religious (pretty much all of them are anglican or something) because I’m Jewish.

I’m still applying to US boarding schools, but I don’t think I’ll get in because my grades and test scores are fine, but my attendance sucks and I’m afraid that they won’t take me for that. Homeschooling is still an option. We’re checking on the whole international school thing in Brazil (I could live there- I have a ton of family there) but I realize that Australian boarding schools start in like 3 weeks or so, and that would be really good for me because I hate my school beyond what’s rational and I need to get out. I have family in Australia, so I won’t be totally alone, but I don’t know what schools are good there.

attendance as in… absences or lates?
i have a about… 6 lates in chemistry (first period of the day, always late by one minute -_-).
and 2 absences. (for interview purposes)

There were 2 potential applicants from Australia on this board. One was a boy applying only to Exeter, perhaps 2 months ago. The other was “Claudia” who was active on this board over the summer. If you look through the threads (I think the search function is not working) for them, you can pm them. I’m sure they have some thoughts. Good luck!

Msu- I have like a month’s worth of absences. Reasons? Personal ones, I guess.

Thanks, Burb Parent. I don’t really have time to actually search through every thread for them, so I’ll just wait till the search function starts working again.

I feel I am in a rather good position to answer this - I am about to start 10th Grade at a highly regarded Australian school.

In the part of Australia I live in, Melbourne, there are a few notable top tier boarding schools, with all of the top ones being religiously affiliated. The following are regarded as being in the top 8 private schools in the state.

Melbourne Grammar School - www.mgs.vic.edu.au

Majority boarding, rural location well renowned boarding school.

All of the above are great schools (I attend one of them :p) and all belong to the ‘ivy league of private schools in Victoria’ the APS. The religious aspect of the education is more focussed on ‘world religions’ rather than specifically on the school’s religion. I have many Jewish classmates at my current school, it is not that large a factor in regards to the overall education. Further reasearch should help you, and i would be glad to help.(My response isn’t that great… it is late over here (1:04am))

Burb Parent -

I am the Exeter boy I do also happen to know Claudia through a friend, and the coincidence of bumping into each other on this site was amazing!

Thanks HJcoats! I e-mailed Melbourne Grammar School, Geelong Grammar, I already e-mailed and they’re full, and I feel kind of bad (and sorry if this is your school) but I’m not even going to e-mail Scotch because it’s the name of an alcoholic drink and it would be really weird, going to a school with a name like that. Kind of like Governer Dummer’s (I know they changed it, but still…) lol.

I’m a girl-Are there any more good schools? They could be in Sydney, too. Melbourne’s great, too, though. I’d rather they were closer to city rather than woods. I wouldn’t mind going to a girl’s school, I guess.

I need to find a good school that still takes people now! ahhh! lol -.-

PurpoisePal - I assumed you were male (it was 1am when I wrote that message…) I apologize. It will be quite hard to secure a place at a top boarding school in Australia, although I do know of people entering during the school year, as well as at the beginning of the year.

Highly regarded girls boarding schools in Victoria;

Unfortunatly, the reality is all of the top and most highly respected Australian boarding schools are religiously affiliated, although as I have mentioned, this doesn’t play a major role in day to day school life.

(Silly Question) I assume you e-mailed Melbourne GIRLS Grammar School? The site above (Melbourne Grammar) is for the all male section of the school (my school:D), and Scotch is also all boys.

I’m am going away for a week, but if you have anymore questions I would be happy to answer them! Oh, and by the way Melbourne Grammar and Scotch have quite an intense rivalry… I was happy when I read your explanation for not liking Scotch :D

Oh… There were pictures of girls on the website so I thought it was co-ed! lol

I think I e-mailed MLC already, and I’ll e-mail the rest. I have an aunt in Melbourne, so it’s good that you’re giving me mostly melbourne schools lol (she lives in North Caulfield. Do you know where that is? - I have no idea lol but I think it’s near the city but just like, suburban.).
