I’m going to take Chemistry next year, and since I really have nothing to do this summer apart from going on a trip, I wanted to get a little headstart on it. What book is the best primer? And I am planning on taking the Chemistry SAT, so this thread isn’t non-topical.

Barrons! Awesome book

Would Barron’s be helpful even if I haven’t taken chemistry yet? My Barron’s book for bio doesn’t really teach well, it’s mostly review.

I found that princeton review is good for a general understanding of chem; however, barron’s is necessary for a comprehensive understanding of what will be tested. I used both guides, but I think that barron’s overprepared me enough to get an 800. That said, I think that the chem subject test is mostly balancing and basic chem.

I would personally recommend Cengage Learning’s General Chemistry: Hybrid Edition. Though, for your purposes, it is probably very expensive (college textbook), but everything is explained VERY clearly and it starts off with the absolute basics that you need to know. You’ll know more than you’ll ever need to for high school.
I’d get this if you are more interested in learning chemistry than just preparing for the test.
