Does anyone know a good place?

P.S. I meant cheesesteak :)

Does anyone know a good place?

P.S. I meant cheesesteak :)

While visiting Philly last summer, my kids tried three of the more popular places - they voted Tony Luke’s as the best. The employees at one of the gift stores also recommended TL.

Tony Luke’s, but get the roast pork, provolone, and broccoli rabe sandwich.

sounds tasty.

when youngest S and i were in Philly last summer…we went to Geno’s

he argued all the way, “why are we taking a cab to get a stupid sandwich”

then he had one “wit”…

argument over.

forever.

Booklady, my H and I liked the pork sandwich better than the cheesesteak, too!

Lol Jd, my kids have finally adopted our habit of going to great lengths to try the best whatever everywhere we go. You must be a chowhounder.

Another vote for the pork sandwich, I’ve driven from NYC to Philly on occasion for one.

Go to Reading Terminal, you can try the pork and some of the best cheesesteak in the city. And don’t forget to try the food carts around Penn, also for some of the city’s best food!

If you want to travel–you can get an amazing and reasonbly-priced French dip sandwich from Philipe’s in LA, near Chinatown. In Philadelphia, we had some wonderful Italian food at a restaurant right across the street from the Marriott next to the convention. Sorry, we never had the cheesesteak while in Philly.

Thanks for all the suggestions - please keep them coming :)

Unfortunately, Tony Luke’s does not seem to be open on Sundays.

Also, if anyone has any ideas of what to do in Philly on a rainy day, those would be appreciated :)

Museums are open on rainy days and we have lots of good ones.

can’t help you with restaurants as I do not eat out.

there is a Cezanne exhibit at the museum of art and a special Galileo exhibit at the Franklin institute

college student…next time go to the Mutter Museum…unless you are squemish.

hmom5, another Chowhounder here. We always try to eat at that sort of place when on the road, so as to avoid the fast food joints.

As for what to do in Philly: Independence Hall if you’re a history buff, and definitely the Art Museum/Franklin Institute as sueinphilly said. If you have a car and are up for a short trip to the suburbs, [The Barnes Foundation](http://barnesfoundation.org/) is unique, and will soon be moving to the city. It’s worth seeing in its original habitat, so to speak.

A Philadelphia native (although he’s lived in Boston for a long time) recommended Larry’s for an authentic cheese steak sandwich. (It’s near St. Joe’s University). My friend made the recommendation and then wondered if it was still open–he googled it and found out Larry’s was still around–fifty-some years and going strong. I went to Philly last weekend to see D2, but didn’t get to try Larry’s. I’ll go back at the end of the semester to help her bring stuff home (she’s a pack rat and will need more than one trunk). I plan to try Larry’s then.

I’d second the recommendation for the Barnes Foundation. Its collection is mind boggling. I went to the Cezanne exhibit last weekend–currently at the Art Museum and it was wonderful too.

We went to see the Liberty Bell in Philly–figured it was the thing to do. The line moved pretty quickly & it was worth it.

You have to try Pat’s King of Steaks and Jim’s. Just to say you’ve been there. One whiz, wit.

Bromfield: as I type this, H has gone to Larry’s to pick up an order for us, S, and three friends of S’s who are here. I’ll report back on the food. :)

Remember, the proper cheese for a Philly Cheesestake is Cheez-Whiz

Cheez Wiz is not cheese. It’s more like molten orange plastic. ;)

Anyway, Larry’s was a very good cheesesteak, but not as excellent as our neighborhood favorite, Dakota, which uses a better roll.

We just went to Dalessandros on Wendover near Philadelphia University. Really good. Local joint. Line out the door.

Molten orange plastic is far more palatable.
