Best College for Humanities/English

Brown

UPenn

Duke

Columbia

I’m really interested in these schools and want to go ED on the one that is best for this field. I really love them all so that is why i want to go ed…not cuz of the advantage

Columbia/UPenn
Duke

-

Brown

Maybe look into some of the liberal arts schools, like Middlebury, Swarthmore, Haverford

Yeah I agree liberal arts schools are the way to go: Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, Swarthmore, etc.

Maybe UChicago too.

I disagree with schrizto. While many LACs are wonderful institutions, particularly the ones suggested, all four of the universities mentioned provide superb undergraduate educations.

For English:
Columbia/Duke/Penn
Brown

You could get roughly the same English education at any of the four. If you have to choose a deciding factor for ED, it shouldn’t be the quality of the English department. Personally, I’d lean toward Penn or Duke for an all-around great undergraduate experience. YMMV. :)

YOU SHOULD NOT BE APPLYING ED period!

ED should be used when and only when you are absolutely 100 percent sure, and in love with your 1st choice school, and frankly I even think that’s an unrealistic position to be in especially if you’ll depend on financial aid, and or expect because your low income that you’ll have a free education at a top private school.

I know what its like to be in your shoes and your age, but don’t be stubborn to simply apply to a school because you want a school with X name. Frankly theres to many differences between the 4 schools you asked us to consider. If you would have said something like should i apply ed to brown/wesleyan/vassar or amherst, than i would trust you more to know you’ve done your research and know what kind of school is the best fit for you.

I know i am in love with all four schools and i think that going ED will boost my chances. now that i know after visiting/talkin with students that all of them are schools that FIT me. im just curious which has best english program

and i didnt like Lacs. they;re too small/lack graduate programs

Well, alternatively, you can aim for large, very prestigious, state unis such as UC Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA, UC Irvine, UVa or Wisconsin. Their English/Humanities programs are excellent. For example, Berkeley’s English dept is number 1 in the nation (or probably the world), along with Yale and Harvard. That alone will tell you that the best state unis are even more competitive than the elite privates. :)
