Best college for quirky kid who never got his Hogwarts Letter [NH resident, 3.8199 GPA, top 26% rank, 1280 SAT; prefer <$50k, can stretch to $80k; history, English, classics]

Thank you! I have given some thought to Holy Cross because of its strong Classics Program, we may look at it when we see Clark. I was thinking Connecticut College might be too sporty. Skidmore might work.

Will look again at Mary Washington. I worry about Drew’s financial condition. You have a point about St. Anselm, course offerings for Classics look strong.

Mary Washington is supposedly a regional, sort of locals type school and I can’t speak to the strength of the school but this came out three years ago.

I have no idea how sports focused Conn College is…because all of the students I know who went there were very interested in the arts. I think this school is worth looking at.

Agree, I don’t think “sporty” is Conn’s reputation.

FWIW, I have two colleagues whose kids graduated from Mary Washington in the last 4-5 years and both rave about it. No idea if it would be the right fit for this student, but just wanted to let folks know that students there do, indeed, seem very happy.

Parent of two Holy Cross students. Very solid for classics; can’t go wrong in that regard. Our son minored in classics while an ROTC cadet. Obviously I’m biased but he has become a real scholar-warrior in the best sense.

The main HC consideration is student fit. It’s a somewhat unique place. There’s a major focus on “men and women for others”; meaning working with poor kids in the Worcester area and more broadly. You have to be comfortable with that. The HC Jesuit foundation also pushes intellectual inquiry and rigorous academics to the extreme. However, in general, the place does not have a highly competitive resume-building pre-professional vibe like BC. Grads do very well in the business world, although many choose passion over $. So it depends what a student wants out of their college experiences.

I second Muhlenberg. Also gives aid. Several other close by schools like Lehigh and DeSales so maybe it doesn’t feel quite so small. But you have St John’s Annapolis on the list so I guess small isn’t an issue

If Pitt might be OK then what about UDel? My very quirky niece is there and loved it. My S24 almost went and found his quirky people during visits in the languages depts. Mid sized - large enough to have a quirky crowd. Less urban but you can get to NY, DC, and PHL by train. Pretty brick campus. Old school with more character than we realized (one of the oldest colonial colleges). Affordable. Merit. TONS of majors.
