You want to work for an oil company? You want to drill for more oil?

Have you not seen the news?

if colleges recruit heavily from a certain college it’s going to be because it’s nearby…I don’t know a thing about oil…but if you go to a college near the action is there will likely be a strong network with the big employers and the best/closest school.

What does the news have to do with anything. If anything, more engineers in that business will do nothing but help avert things like this oil spill. Besides, its not like BP decided “hey let’s cut the pipe and see what happens.” It was an unfortunate accident as a result of a blowout, and as far as anyone knows, nothing could have been done to prevent it other than just not drilling.

If you want to be a Drilling Engineer, almost any college that has a Pet. Eng. degree will suffice.

The key to being a Drilling Engineer is getting more practical experience away from school. Try to get a summer job with an oil company in their drilling department. Even better, get a summer job with a drilling contractor, and actually work as a roughneck. You will be amazed at how quickly you will differentiate yourself from your peers if you will take that step.

I speak from 28 years of experience as a Drilling Engineer. Great way to make a living.

how do i get started?

You just don’t become a drilling engineer. You can assist in that area if you wish and the company lets you but you usually have to work your way into that position after 2-5 years. So any PetE school will do. It requires on the job training anyway.
