Best colleges for artsy B student, exceptional and published poet/performance artist

What would be the best colleges/universities for an exceptionally talented published poet/performance artist, B student with 1140 SAT? No southern schools please below SC–prefers cooler climate. Finances are an issue. There will be a portfolio with video as well as poetry. Main interests: creative writing, poetry readings, theater, the arts.
Thanks!

I should mention the student’s GPA is 3.1 unweighted and 3.7 weighted.

How about Knox College in Illinois? It’s a small, artsy, very diverse liberal arts college with a very well-respected creative writing program. It has a brand new building for visual arts and a pretty good theater program, too. Knox has lots of B students and is generous with merit scholarships.

VCU.

Thanks so much!

I’d look at Goucher

Look into to Bennington College. I get the feeling that their numbers are dropping so that might help. Also, Hampshire College

Kalamazoo and Knox are good options for the artistic B student. Both are open, warm, engaged communities. Knox had just broken ground on new fine arts building when I was there last, and the arts building which had been used for music and theater and fine arts is to be renovated to be just performing arts – theater and music. So those facilities are going to be wonderful. My kid was very impressed by the jazz professor he met with, and his favorite, all time class that he visited was at Knox, he found the professor riveting and the class discussion active and intelligent. Kalamazoo, as a city, has a big arts scene, and Western Michigan University is across the road from Kalamazoo College. WMU has a strong music and performing arts program and, while I don’t know how it works specifically, Kzoo students can take classes at WMU if the class is not available at Kzoo, so there could be some additional opportunities at WMU.

In terms of finances, both Knox and Kzoo give merit awards, though if a student is eligible for financial aid, the merit may perhaps replace loans and work study but is probably not going to change the family’s Expected Family Contribution – run the Net Price Calculator on each college’s website to get more detailed prediction about finances.

I know someone exactly like this who will be attending Ithaca College. I also thought of Goucher and Middlebury, though I think of Middlebury for my own selfish reasons as I was a poet and would have been in heaven to go there. Good luck!

Bennington, Goucher, Lewis & Clark, Sarah Lawrence, Emerson, Kalamazoo, Beloit, Evergreen, Ithaca and Skidmore.

Bard, but probably need to apply through their examination method (no need for transcripts or test scorse). I’d be slightly worried because of finances; how much is your family willing and able to afford every year?
