We have found a couch that seems to be promising. We are waiting for the saleswoman to see if they will remove the slipcover and cover the piece in leather instead of muslin (due to our dust mite allergies). We are also interested in possibly two chairs that go with that piece. She called it a bench, but it has an upholstered back and thin, upholstered arms and H calls it a perfect couch. She will try to get back to us soon and we will see what transpires.

There are a few furniture makers, but I didn’t think it should be THAT challenging just to find a suitable piece or pieces.

Anyone with experience with furniture from Crate and Barrel? We found a leather sofa that looks possible that we will try out when we visit LA later this month. Have never purchased anything from them, but know the company has been around for quite a few years.

Ok, have tried shippers, movers, the manufacturers, the online furniture stores and have left a message with a local store who has a relationship with a shipper. It is way tougher than it should be. Shippers so car have wanted $1900-2600 just to the piece of furniture. The cost of the furniture adds to this price.

HImom, it sounds like you are going to have to make some kind of compromise. I would start by looking at every furniture store in your area that sells leather couches. Local delivery will certainly cost you less than delivery from the mainland. Perhaps, the compromise needs to be on the Roomba clearance. Did you see anything that would work positioning wise with that lower clearance?

Am checking one small sofa company that has very reasonable shipping–$217 to HI. Will call them tomorrow and see how it goes. We may have to go to Maine so H can sit on their sofas in their showroom before ordering, as part of East Coast trip.

It is high enough off ground and allows customization. Am keeping my fingers crossed.

We did love our visit to Freeport in 1986. Good excuse to re-visit. :). Thankfully we aren’t in a hurry to purchase and are doing ok with researching.

Ok, bought a couch from Design within Reach in Pasadena because saleswoman was best about getting the sofa delivered inside our home. She was very nice and said she’d be following and tracking it every step of the way.

We were able to sit on a sample in their showroom and We both were happy with the sofa. It is an American designer and made in the US.

Nice! Gray leather sounds very versatile. Is it specifically designed for those 5’8" or shorter? I have friends who’ve gotten furniture from DWR and they are taller…

It was something that all three of us who sat on it were comfortable on. It should be comfortable for a wide range of body sizes and types. Was happy with the tight seat and back, which means no one needs to straddle any cracks.

Happily, they ship to HI, and do assemble in our living room (adding the legs).

There seem to be 2 types of couch sitters - those who sit “in” the couch and those who want to sit “on” it.
I have a massive Mitchell Gold chesterfield that works best when you sit way at the back with your feet toward the front of the cushions. I love it. My parents on the other hand are perchers, they want their feet on the floor and each stack up every available pillow behind them in order to do that. It is almost painful to watch! Glad you found what you wanted HImom.

Our couch was delivered yesterday! H and I are delighted. It’s high enough for the robotic vacuum and H has no trouble getting up from it, as he did from the futon couch that he found just too deep and awkward. It has an undivided seat and back so you can easily seat four with no one worrying about a crack or split in the seat or cushions.

Thanks–it was a learning experience to find out how few couches met our criteria and would be delivered to our home. Hopefully we won’t need to buy another couch for many years now. :)
