We have been lookoling for a couch for a few years now and have come to the sad conclusion there aren’t many folks designing furniture to fit those many of us who are 5’8" or less. Many of them are simply too feel for our back to rest comfortably against and the back of the knee to hit the edge of the couch properly.

Ideally, the couch will also be at least 3.5 inches above the ground so the robotic vacuum can go under it. Shopped unsuccessfully at many furniture stores and sadly no IKEA or its delivery to HI. Help!!!

Somehow they seem smaller to me than other sofas. Assuming they don’t have a store in HI, check the depth of the cushions from front to back to see if they are smaller than “regular” sofas.

VH, love Mitchel Gold! He is my mom’s good friend’s son but I still don’t get a discount (though his furniture is quite reasonably priced, imo.)

I am 5’1" and have a very hard time sitting on most sofa’s. At home I sit lengthwise and take up the whole sofa. We have two in the family room so I’m not that big of a couch hog.

You can search for apartment size or condo size couches.

If you aren’t looking for heirloom quality furniture, we just purchased couches from a company called England, which is a division of lazy boy. They are comfortable for us and I am much shorter than 5 8. However, they are a NC company and I wonder if you can find them in Hawaii.

Go into a showroom and ask to be pointed only to couches with the smallest “Seat Depth.” That’ll focus your shopping time. It’s the deep seats for long thighbones that throws everything off for us shorties.

Our best couch was custom-made for this reason. But using “seatdepth” as a guidepost, we have recently found in-stock choices that work. Good luck! We have one big rocking chair for our tall friends. Obviously we can only entertain them one-at-a-time.

OK, have contacted both websites, to see whether either will ship to Hawaii and how much that would cost. Did encourage the lady on the latter website to see if they could start supplying furniture in our state for the MANY who are under 5’8" and live in smaller places–condos, apartments and small houses 1200 square feet or less. We don’t want the rooms dominated by overstuffed furniture and really only a few of us are 6’ and taller. They have have a taller loveseat or other chair and let the rest of us be comfortable.

VeryHappy, we went into a dealer for the furniture maker you mentioned. They had some possibilities. We also went to place that has stressless chairs and couches. We also saw some other small scale furniture. Took lots of photos and will mull this over.

Anyone with experience with kleindesign.com, that makes custom chairs, sofas and more? It’s in MA, but they will ship to HI for a price. We may have to get to Maine to try out the furniture in the showroom before deciding to purchase.

Try Room & Board. I was looking for a sofa that could fit through a narrow doorway, and they were one of the few that carried something that worked. They also get amazing online reviews. Our experience was very positive.

When I was shopping, I found what I thought would work – don’t remember the company, but it was a custom design – and ran away fast after googling the company. Tons of bad reviews. (I’m sure it wasn’t kleindesign.)

Thanks–the couch I saw listed that is covered in leather (which we prefer due to our allergies to dust mites) is still too deep for us at roomandboard.com, but it was worth a look. We may stick with the store where we were able to sit on the couch, if it is a reasonable price. The saleswoman promised to do some research and get back to us on options. She’s about our size so should have similar issues with sitting on a couch.

I’m confused. I’m 5’6" and I’ve never had a problem sitting on a couch. Should I have noticed a problem? I guess if I’m not comfy I just put a throw pillow behind me. I never realized that there was an issue with seat sizes.

I’m fine but H has definite ideas about couches and how deep they should be for those of us who are not so tall. He gets tired of having to put a pillow behind himself and wants a couch that we are comfortable sitting in, since we are the main folks sitting in the couch and many or most of those we know are about our size. Lots of the furniture in our store rooms are just too heavy and overstuffed for our tastes and more petite statures.

H is also funny about wanting to have his feet touch the ground and have things proportioned for US users instead of some artibrary larger person that doesn’t live and rarely visits our home.
