Best English Literature program, for Masters?

Can someone pls let me know what uni in the US offers the English Literature program, for Masters? Preferably an IVY League, that’s really good with Eng Lit? The course pack, the instructors, and about the campus life too.

Why do you want to go to an Ivy League university? Although they do have excellent programs in English lit, it’s just an athletic conference, and there are lots of excellent programs in English literature that aren’t at Ivy Leagues - like Stanford, Berkeley, Chicago, and Virginia.

There are lots of universities in the U.S. that offer a master’s in English. You have to visit their webpages to find out whether they offer an MA. A lot of top programs only offer a PhD program - for example, the only Ivy League universities that actually offer an MA in English literature are Penn and Columbia. Cornell offers an MFA in creative writing, and one of the other ones (I don’t remember which) offers an MA in comparative literature. But you have to look it up in order to see about it.

Why do you want an MA in English literature? And why do you think you need to go to a school that is very prestigious? English lit programs at prestigious universities are really expensive, and are expected to be funded primarily with loans unless you are very lucky.

Agree with juillet that you should really stop and think about why you want to go to an ivy. Yes, they probably have great programs, but so do a lot of public schools, too.

And, as juillet also mentioned, funding is an area of concern, especially for MA students in English. There are some programs out there that fund English lit students at the MA level (off the top of my head, Miami of Ohio, Lehigh University, maybe New Mexico, I think Illinois State), but you have to do your research and also hope for the best. Sometimes they only fund a few MA students while asking the rest to pay, so it sometimes comes down to luck, too.

It’s true that, in English lit, most programs focus on their PhD programs and recruit students straight from the BA. This isn’t true in other subfields of English studies (composition and rhetoric, for example), but again, it really comes down to doing some research (Google “MA English lit programs” and read the details on the websites) and knowing what you really want.

I’ll be frank (as a PhD holder in English and as a professor). Why do you want a master’s degree in English literature? It has relatively little use as a credential unless you are a high school teacher in a public school who wants the pay scale bump. What is your goal? If it’s eventually a PhD and/or a full-time college teaching position, you’re much better off applying directly for a slot in a funded PhD program. It’s not easy or common to get an MA first and then go on to a funded PhD program at a different institution. Don’t take out loans for an MA or a PhD in English literature at any school, including an Ivy. If you don’t get awarded funding, don’t go. It’s that simple. (Unless money is not a concern for you, you can pay the tuition, and you’re getting the MA for your own interest.)
