I am in my last year of my undergraduate studies in civil engineering, and I’m hoping to go to graduate school next year. However, I don’t know what specific field to go in!! I’ve narrowed down my choices to construction management, geotechnical, transportation, and water resources. I am also interested in sustainable design (I am a LEED Green Associate). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so are there any particular fields that are booming in my area right now? What would be the best field to get a Master’s from the ones I stated above? Thank You!

Ah, I just finished my undergraduate in CE. I am also very interested in sustainability (I am a LEED GA as well), so I’ve decided to enter a MS in Environmental Engineering, which focuses on water resources/treatment and air. It is a great choice since all prereqs for the program are satisfied by your CE degree. And the environmental field is currently growing, so there should be plenty of opportunity at graduation.

Thank you for your response! What do people here think about Construction Management? Does it require a certain “extroverted” personality? I’m a tad introverted but friendly at the same time. Are average salaries pretty similar for all fields in civil engineering?

Extraversion isn’t a requirement to work in construction management, but those who are introverted may not find it as enjoyable. You’re always going to be working with others; if you can’t work with others, you won’t succeed. It’s not a field where you’ll be spending a lot of time working out engineering and math problems, though you should have a good understanding of it if you work in the heavy construction side of the industry.

What are some of the characteristics of an ideal job for you? I work in construction management, so perhaps I can help you figure out if it’s something you would enjoy.

Salaries are not drastically different, though construction management and structural engineering tend to be on the higher end.
