Best Graduate Schools of Education

The purpose of this thread is to convey your opinion concerning which graduate school
(in education) is the best to attend and why.

I will subit my opinion:

Teachers College, Columbia University (Columbia University’s Graduate School of Education, Psychology, and Health) is highly respected, highly ranked, and affords students access to (arguably) the best scholars and researchers in this county,

Teachers College, Columbia University has been (invariably) ranked in the top ten institutions in the category of graduate schools of education *according to US News.

In 2023 and 2024, Teachers College Columbia University was ranked #1 in the category of graduate schools of education *US News outranking institutions such as Harvard,
Yale, Princeton and Stanford.

Their programs in Special Education is (arguably) one of the very best programs in this country.

Other highly regarded and highly ranked programs include: Developmental Psychology,
Counseling Psychology and Social Psychology.

Degrees are conferred by Columbia University.

Yale and Princeton do not have the Graduate School of Education.

Here is my opinion (as a career educator). Get yourself a job in education if that is what your undergrad degree is in. Work for a year or two, and see if you actually like working in the field (it’s not a walk in the park). Most public schools contracts offer at least a little bit of reimbursement for graduate school degree courses.

Go to a grad school in the state in which you want to teach. Get your graduate degree there.

Teachers College grad programs are fine, but many are not designed for those who want to teach in the classroom, and the costs are very high to take the courses.

I guess my question is…why Columbia Teachers College?

I interviewed people for jobs for many many years in my school district…and no one cared at all about grad school rankings. Not one bit. But a great recommendation from a previous job went a VERY long way in terms of considering applicants for hire.

I would suggest you look at things other than the school rankings.

ETA, I know and worked with people who had developmental psych masters, special education masters, and were trained as literacy consultants at Teachers College. Even those people said…it was a good experience, but they could have gotten the training elsewhere…more easily…and still worked the same jobs.

While my D had a.very good experience at TC, I don’t see the point of this thread. As with any ranking, the “best school” is the one that is a fit for the individual student – both academically and financially.

Hmmmm, a first post touting one program and one program only with a title of Best Schools, as in plural. (My guess is that OP is affiliated with TC.)

Sure, Teachers College is great (and is a huge cash cow for Columbia), but like politics, all education is local.

Exactly. Folks in Texas will be more impressed with a degree from Austin than Columbia. Folks in Wisconsin would rather see a degree from Madison.
