That’s just it. ** YOU DON’T** have to go to a school that’s (usually) seriously expensive. I was listening to a webinar just yesterday where it was reported that 94% of LACs discount their tuition, with the average tuition discount being 53%. Yes, more than half off the “sticker price”. So its time to think about tuition like buying that expensive car or airline ticket. Most people do not pay full price. Don’t know what you happened to see/read/hear 2 weeks ago that changed your mind, but please keep reading. There are many, MANY very fine and very affordable LACs. Agree that no one should go into serious debt paying for undergrad. But in many, many cases, LACs are way more affordable than other schools, especially many OOS state schools.
jym626,
Not sure about that. Are you a UF grad? If you are in FL your options for small and LA include Stetson and Rollins and even if you cut the sticker price in half you are dealing with quite a bill that has to be quadrupled just to get the 4-year degree. If you go off to Davidson, Lehigh or any of the other quality LAC’s you have the same issue because half of 50 or 60 is still enough to put some serious debt on the balance sheet.
If your are in FL you are lucky to have FSU and UF and publics. That is my very, very biased opinion. Publics in FL are dirt cheap compared to the rest of the nation. Some would say “under funded” also but as of right now schools in FL are a bargain. Now, outside of FL no one will be impressed but that is okay.
This is going waaay off topic, but suffice it to say there are many, MANY excellent LAC college options. Excellent. I don’t know what you are “not sure about”, but the stats I quoted in post # 40 are directly from yesterday’s webinar. You can believe it… or not. I don’t care. You seem to be limiting your consideration of some LACs or small U’s to a few in driving distance (except Lehigh). Open your eyes. There are many more (as well as some others in FL).
No I am not in FL. We had excellent instate options too, but neither of my children chose them, which was completely fine. One went to a very good private (was a U, not a LAC, but no matter) with a name you would recognize that would have been, at full sticker price (room/board/transportation/books/etc), 5X what we paid. We paid equal or less than what our state flagship would have cost. Our flagship is a good school and a great bargain, but not the right choice for either of my children.
Lets move on. This thread of yours is about teslas and lotuses.
One more thought before moving on-- Separate from the Bright Futures or Florida Prepaid college deals, tuition/room/board for the big flagships (UF/FSU) are, for in-state students, estimated at around 20K/year (almost twice that for OOS). There are plenty of other schools whose tuition, with tuition discounting, can be at or below 20K/yr.
Give me a Porsche 911 Turbo for around $150k and I’ll pay for an entire state school education with the remaining $100k…
If you are into a speedy car get a Nissan GTR. Its one of the fastest cars out there and is cheaper than a Lambo, Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc. Its only around 100k, but if u own one u usually mod it so its ridiculously fast.(could get it over 2200 HP with the correct modifications)
The GTR is another value buy, as is the Corvette.
As a boy I was a big fan of the Lamborghini badge and I have Italian friends who live near Maranello and swear by Ferrari.
But it seems that every time Car & Driver tests the 911 against those supercars, the 911 wins. Apparently it is fast enough and drives like an absolute dream: balance in, balance through, and balance out of a curve.
So if I can get that for $150k, that’s my choice.
