Hey, applications are due in two days, and i have no idea which housing I want to stay at.

I just found a roommate today, and she wants to stay in the north campuses - carmichael or kenan-alder.
but I just thought that since she wants a north campus, it might be just better if we picked grandville.
but i heard some rumors that GT has some really bad maintenance,
and i was wondering what’s the best top 3 suite style dorms were?

There are numerous threads about Granville in the archives, look them up. I don’t recommend it for OOS students or in state students who are not planning to go Greek.

I have no experience with the dorms as this is my D’s first year. Based on her campus visit and visiting a few friends in the dorms, she chose Granville. There are pro’s and con’s to each of the dorms. From a budget perspective, I wish she would have decided another dorm. However, she struggled with her final decision of schools and Granville was one of the the items from her visits that excited her about UNC. Plus, it is only 2 miles from the ballet school she is hoping to attend to continue her dance.

I heard Granville is for upperclassmen and people who want to go Greek, as well as being a little bit more pricey. I would sign up for Carmichael. ;)

My son signed up for Granville and he is not planning to go Greek. He stayed there for a soccer camp a couple of summers ago. He liked the location and the amenities. We’ll see.

I lived in Granville my first year at UNC and loved it. Lived with an OOSer and he loved it too. The pool and food are great, plus Granville has a ton of special events throughout the year that are pretty fun (foam party at the pool, casino night, special dinners, etc).

Well, if you’re choosing between Granville and North Campus as a freshman, I’d say pick the lesser of two evils - Granville. Sure, it’s mostly Greek but you can’t beat the location of it, and North Campus dorms for freshmen are notoriously known for being boring and anti-social. I lived in Alderman as a sophomore, so I already had an established friend group but whoa would it had sucked to been a freshman living there! Some people have good experiences - cloying did! Also, North Campus dorms are A LOTTT nicer than Granville, which I would put on par with South Campus except indoor. The rooms are just kinda dingy and small.

I’ll be attending UNC in the fall as a freshman. I’m living in Granville–and no, I don’t plan to go Greek. I think that the dorms are much nicer, as well as the amenities. I also like the location of GT; being right next to Starbucks is especially nice to me! :]

As far as prices are concerned, we figured how much it would cost to live in regular housing+meal plan and live in Granville Towers+meal plan. The verdict? The costs were only about $300 dollars more for Granville. It seems like Granville has a sort of “rich” stigma attached to it, but honestly, there’s basically no difference. I’d gladly pay an extra $300 to have my room and bathroom cleaned every week! (Along with other good things, too.) :]

I see no problem with Granville. I know others from my small town who currently live there, do not plan to go Greek, and LOVE it.

Just a note about Granville, my daughter lived there and please do not think the maid is going to pick up or move anything to clean because she will not. They will empty the trash, vacuum the floor (whatever floor area is not covered in clothes, LOL), and clean the bathroom. On the day you know they are coming to clean it would be best to clean the floor area of your stuff, but believe me they do not do a great job of cleaning…I guess it is better than no cleaning!

I’m very organized–so I don’t have stuff on my floor–but I HATE cleaning, especially bathrooms! The bathrooms are the main thing I’m excited about. I really wouldn’t expect them to move my junk… There are probably some liability issues with that, and well, they’d probably have to touch really nasty stuff in some dorm rooms. Yuck! :]
