Best housing option?

What is the best housing option at U of I for a chemical engineering major? (in terms of distance to classes, the food, level of noise or lack thereof, etc.) I would be fine with either private housing or university housing.

I personally do not attend U of I, but I have been there so many times visiting friends that I can help you out with this question. Since you mentioned that you’re going to be a chemical engineer major, I highly recommend you take a look at Hendrick House. The vast majority of the residents who reside at HH are engineers like yourself. The dorm itself is private, so a little more pricey, but you said you would be fine with it.

The location of Hendrick House is perfect for engineers. The core engineering classes you will be taking is literally down the road. Now I don’t know if you’ll be taking any gen ed classes, but if you are, you may have to walk a bit to get to those classes. But that’s not a big issue. U of I has a very good bus system and the campus is laid out in a way that students can walk to classes that are across campus relatively fast.

I absolutely LOVE the food at HH! The staff there are so accommodating and ensure that what they cook for you fits your dietary needs. I’m personally vegetarian, they will ALWAYS have options for vegetarians. I actually have some friends who are literally allergic to pretty much everything. The staff went out of their way to make sure my friend got what they needed. HH has a midnight meal plan as well for those who are going to be studying far into the night (as an engineer, believe me, you’ll be studying deep into the night).

In terms of noise, HH is virtually quiet. The residents that live there know that the people around them need to be in a quiet space to study. But if an issue arises where there is a rowdy individual, report it, it will be dealt with very quickly.

I generally visit U of I once a year to visit friends, I have stayed at HH three times now. Even though I only stayed for a few days at a time, the residents and staff members actually remember me! Although this place may seem like a studious dorm, it is quite the social dorm if you’re willing to get out of your room to socialize. You can study in the cafeteria or the lounge, you’ll meet all sorts of people there.

The only other place I can think of that you could live in is ISR, which by the way, is literally across the street from HH. I don’t know too much about ISR besides the fact that if the engineers don’t live in HH, they live at ISR. It wouldn’t hurt to look into ISR as well.

Hope I was able to help and good luck with your engineering ambitions! I hope to attend U of I in a few years after my military service is up!

I’ve been wondering what would be a good housing option too. I applied to Illini Tower but then I read all those negative reviews and then I took a step back. I also completed an application to Hendrick House. Does anybody have some information on housing and what is a good place to study and still is a bit social. I will be studying Engineering.

Illini Tower has always been a very expensive option, and I’m not sure that it has ever lived up to the cost. Now mind you, I graduated in 1989, but everything I read about IT now is exactly what I knew about it back many years ago. I lived in Hendrick House- had a great time though food wasn’t that great. The big negative at Hendrick House (and any private dorm) is that if I was on the other side of campus, I couldn’t just stop at any university dorm for lunch- I either had to get back to HH or eat some fast food somewhere. But I really don’t think that occurred too many times.
