Best in Sunbelt

What are the best US colleges in the sunbelt? For the purpose of this post, I’ll define that as locations south of Interstate 40. (Okay, you can cheat a little and include Las Vegas and even Hawaii and even up to 100 miles north of I-40.)
To get started…
Top Privates: Rice, Vanderbilt, Duke, Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd, Claremont, Pomona, Pepperdine, Emory, USC, Rhodes, Tulane, Wake Forest, Davidson…
Top Publics? UCLA, Clemson, …?

Publics: add New College of Florida

UT-Austin, Georgia Tech for the publics.

Probably should add Trinity University (TX) and SMU (TX), and consider adding in Baylor (TX) to the Privates.
I’d also add Florida and consider adding in Georgia to the Publics.

Overall not too many top schools in the sunbelt, compared to the cooler/frost belt, is there? Even those it represents roughly half the country.
We probably should add UCSD to the list. Cal Poly SLO and UCSB are as far north as we should go, but aren’t really top notch.

In California, I doubt that most people would regard UCSD, UCSB, or UCI as inferior to Pepperdine, which made the list in your first post. US News rates UCSD (#38), UCSB (#44) and UCI (#44) all higher than Pepperdine (#54), and also higher than another one of your original picks, Tulane (#50).

University of Florida and Florida State are both quite good.

And don’t forget UVA / UNC.

Duke
Rice
Vanderbilt
William & Mary
Davidson
Emory
Wake Forest
Washington & Lee

SMU can be removed from that list!

Duke, Vandy, Emory, Rice

Stanford, Pomona, Mudd, Cal, UCLA,
