Best iPhone alternatives

Amazon is running a $.01 sale on a goodly number of cellphones/smartphones http://wireless.amazon.com/f/pennyupgrade.

I’ve been a Blackberry user since the Dark Ages before the iPhone and I have always tended to keep my phone until it dies. My Blackberry Curve 8300 hasn’t died yet and I always figured I’d go iPhone when that happened.

But with this promotion, I’m tempted to act now. However, I’m overwhelmed at the choice of devices (the iPhone isn’t one of the choices) and a quick look at CNET and other review sites I often use didn’t really help me.

I’m an AT&T customer and cannot/will not change (we live in Mexico much of the year and I have a grandfathered plan which includes all of US and Mexico at no roaming fees).

Recommendations?

PS… I clicked through to order one of these and see that the price changes (no surprise) depending on your carrier and plan. The example I put in my cart changed to $29.99 with a $20 data plan. That’s still appealing to me.

For AT&T Android the top one is Samsung Galaxy S ™ II

The Windows phones are getting good notice. They have three by Samsung, although people are waiting for the Nokia windows phone.

What’s wrong with the iPhone? My personal recommendation.

Nothing wrong with the iPhone… it’s just not one of the ones on promotion.

My daughter just got the HTC Merge, which also has a keyboard. She is very happy with it.

I am an iPhone user but have family and friends who, for various reasons, made other choices- usually Android platform phones. No one is as happy with the device as iPhone users seem to be, despite some of the issues like difficulty typing etc. I realize you are trying to take advantage of a good pricing deal, but if it were me I would go with iPhone.

^^^ That was my suspicion, MOWC. So I might just wait and get an iPhone. But I’ll see how others weigh in.

I have the Galaxy SII. It has really changed my life. My whole life is in google (gmail, calendar, picasa for my photo, google docs…). The iPhone wouldn’t be nearly as good for me and it’s only 3g. And with my aging eyes the larger screen is a huge blessing.

droid 2 has a keyboard, and I loved it. That one may be on sale. I just upgraded to a Razr. Droid 4 is getting ready to come out, and it has a keyboard to it. It is 4g. I personally like the android platform better than the apple platform. But it is all about preferences when it comes to phones!

I have a Samsung Fascinate and my son has the latest Razr. Hubby has the iPhone 4. It’s really a matter of personal preference. About 1/2 the people i know have iPhones, the other 1/2 have Android based phones. Everyone seems happy with their choices. There’s nothing I can’t do on my Samsung that my husband can do on his iPhone. The iPhone to me is too small to read comfortably but that’s just me.

You really need to go into a store and play with the different phones to get a feel for them.

I was all set on getting an iPhone, but then I ended up getting the ZTE Score smartphone for a better deal and I love it!

We’ve had androids for two years (first the Nexus 1 which we loved, but we hated T-Mobil), now we’ve switched to the Razr and Verizon. Hate the extra costs, and it’s really a little big for women’s pockets, but at least we have coverage in NH and Vermont. T-Mobiles coverage seemed to shrink every year. Unlike the Nexus 1 it’s loud enough that I can hear it if I put it in my purse. I had a phone with a keyboard and touchscreen before the Nexus and never used the keyboard, so I didn’t look for a keyboard this time.

I think if I had to do it again, instead of the Razr I’d get the Nexus because I don’t like all the stupid stuff that Motorola stuck on the phone, some of which they won’t let you delete. I should be able to the delete NFL football app.

I have a Droid Incredible, I actually love it. S has a Droid Pro, which has a keyboard (the dInc does not). I agree about “living on Google” once you move to the Android platform. Everything links together really well including docs, pictures, contacts, email, calendar, even youtube is google based now. My only complaint with my dInc since day 1 has been battery life, but I’ve learned to live with it.

Went through this last week when my vintage cell phone finally died.
My son has a Samsung Galaxy and loves it as does my D.
H has iphone.
Sales guy had Samsung Galaxy and loves it but said…
Droids offer the most flexibility overall but since you have to set it up yourself for everything they aren’t necessarily the easiest phone to work. So S and D, being young computer wizards would never part with their droids.
iPhones come pretty much with most decisions made for you. Much less of a learning curve than the droids for people who’d rather have a phone with great features than play with gadgets. They have some neat features such as facetime (I know you could skype but it’s very handy) that allows you to talk face to face with anyone who has a iphone, ipad, ipod. the camera is great and of course getting apps is very easy.
I had a ipod already so was familiar with it and after talking to several sales people with varying opinions settled on the iphone (which of course was not the cheapest option) but I am totally in love with it.

I have a Samsung Focus (yes, a Windows 7 Phone :-)) and absolutely love it. My work phone is a Droid RAZR and what can I say, nice phone, but way too many things on it. Not my cup of tea. Best Android phone out there in my opinion… But not AT&T…

The iPhones are also pretty good, but you pay a premium. The big factor for me was the clean fresh interface of the Windows 7 phones (nothing like old Windows Mobile).

My wife has a Blackberry Torch 9810 and it’s a very well built phone, and iif you’re used to Blackberry, should be OK. The Torch can go 2 days without recharging, and maybe the iPhone, the Androids, bring a long extension cord :-)

I had the blackberry torch and switched to an iphone. The iphone is so much more intuitive. My DH has a droid motorola flipside. Likes it but its had issues. He is already on his second one

I was also trying to decide between Samsung Galaxy and the iphone, and was leaning towards the samsung because the screen is a little bigger. Then, coincidentally, I had to deal with customer service/tech help from both Samsung and Apple and there was no contest! Apple won hands down. I’ve spoken to 3 different people at Samsung and they all sound like they hate their job and were as minimally helpful as possible. The Apple person went beyond the call of duty and even suggested cost cutting measures that will save me from having to buy a new computer. So it’s going to be an iphone for me.

Another reason is that photos look much better on the iphone than the Samsung. I need to have a lot of visual info on my phone for work.

Thanks to all who reponded. Lots of good points. My head is still spinning.

Maybe I’ll wait 'til my Blackberry dies after all. Fear of commitment?

Me and my S both have Samsung Driod Charge from Verizon (4G LTE). We’re very happy with the phone. I especially like it’s 8MP camera pictures. It’s video capture quality is also amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone!

I bought a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon after having an iPod Touch. I prefer the Nexus’s autocorrect and larger screen. When I’m in an area with 4G LTE, it is great to be able to talk and surf at the same time. The Galaxy Nexus is unique for having few carrier or manufacturer-specific apps and instead uses Google’s apps, such as Google Navigation. It also uses Android 4.0, which is a big selling point.

Recently switched from BB Bold to Galaxy Nexus (not by choice but because my brother’s company was bought out by Google and he refuses to give up his iPhone). It’s definitely flashy and I’m still learning all it can do but it’s probably more phone than I need…really just want voice, email, and to look up restaurants every once and awhile.

I will be watching the Windows phone closely because I would love to have a phone that runs the Zune platform – by far the best music player I have tried.
