Best Japanese restaurant in Boston?

We love Japanese food, but are yet to find an excellent Japanese restaurant in Boston. Any suggestions?

For sushi, try Oishii. They used to be only in Chestnut Hill, but I believe they’ve opened a new restaurant in Boston.

Thanks, marite!

marite, vous

If you’re willing to try the near suburbs of Boston as well, try Bluefin at the Porter Exchange Mall in Porter Square (West Somerville). Porter Exchange also has a few other, smaller Japanese places.

Great! Is that where the Kotobukiya Jap. supermarket is?

Porter Square is not in Somerville! And yes, it is where Kotobukiya is located. Porter Exchange is sometimes referred to as “Little Tokyo” with the emphasis on “little” as there are only a few shops.

If you like shabu shabu, we tried one in Chinatown (Essex Street?) and it was quite good.

The Porter Square neighborhood is in fact on the border of Cambridge and Somerville. However, now that I look on Google Maps, it looks like Porter Exchange is right over the line into Cambridge. I stand corrected. :)

The south end Oishii is very expensive. The Chestnut Hill Oishii is tiny and always crowded. You’ll find a wealth of information about sushi and everything else food related on chowhound.com.

There is also a small branch of Oishii in Sudbury, MA. It’s called Oishii Too.

Sudbury is about a 30 minute drive from Cambridge in no traffic, with free parking, so if the other locations are crowded or more expensive, it may be worth the drive.

Fugakyu Cafe is in Sudbury also. Both are located on Route 20.

Thank you for all your replies! I may try them all!

Shabu shabu is one of our favorites too. We went to a place called Kaze in Chinatown. Is that the one you’re talking about, marite?

I went to Ginza in the Fenway Park area, and the sushi was great :)

Clueless, Yes, Kaze is the one.

Any good yakitori places? Also, we find that some places have sushi, but no sashimi. Husband prefers the latter.

Clueless - not strictly speaking a Japanese restaurant, but “Skipjack’s” does a nice job with both sushi and sashimi and has my favorite dish ever…wasabi encrusted salmon. They are located near Copley Square on Clarendon Street and also have two locations in the suburbs.

Mmm…thanks unsoccer-mom! I’ll try that too! My mouth is watering. Boy, do I love to eat! :D

Has anybody tried Ma Soba? I think it’s in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.
