Best Job Markets for New Grads

There is another ranking out about the best new cities for recent grads: The Top 10 Best Places for Recent College Graduates to Move that incorporates cost of living along and availability of apartments, with robustness of the job market for new grads, and projected unemployment.

I’m not interested in starting a debate about the methodology or validity. Just thought it would be fun to share if our new grads lived or found success in one of the cities on the list:

Austin and Raleigh tied for #1.
3. Overland Park, KS
4. Minneapolis
4. St. Louis
6. Richmond
7. Pittsburgh
8. Scottsdale
9. Richardson, TX
10. Atlanta

I’ll start - Mine lives and works within an hour of Raleigh, NC. She’s in Raleigh all the time. Loves that the museums are free, that the community theaters are plentiful, and that it is a young and vibrant city. Her smaller college town is great too. Very affordable, easy commutability, close to the beaches, median age is 28, great health care, etc…

Personally I think the summer heat is a killer but she doesn’t mind and hopes to stay for the long term.

Our son is soon facing a fork in the road: Army/no Army. The no-Army decision tree has Austin near the top of the list. We have family in Austin and have been there many times. There is a lot to like, but housing is very expensive.

The last two decades of my career were spent in Scottsdale where our son was raised. For his skillset, AZ is not on the list, but Scottsdale has a lot to offer and AZ housing in general is more affordable than most places. Gotta love the desert, though.
