Best John Grisham book?

I read A Time to Kill and Pelican Brief, a lon gtime ago, and remember thinking they were pretty entertaining. Looking for a good plane book and thought maybe I should read one of his later books?

I loved The Broker.

I loved the The Client, The Associate, and The Runaway Jury.

I really loved Runaway Jury–I thought it was incredibly intriguing, very well-paced plotted, and pretty well-written. And then the movie completely butchered it (almost as badly as they butchered Indian in the Cupboard!).

Time To Kill. He’s never risen to that level, although the ‘The Firm’ was good (movie ending is very different, so don’t worry about being spoiled). Recent stuff is formulaic, but fine as a beach read.

I’ve read the first 5-6 books and they were all very-very good IMO … or I should say similar in style enough if you liked one you’d probably like them all … and yes, they are perfect plane/train/vacation books IMO.

If you’d like to read a Grisham book that’s not “law” related, I would highly recommend “A Painted House” or “Bleachers”. Enjoyed both.

I’ve read several of his lawyer books (no particular favorite), but like PackMom, I enjoy his regular homey fiction too. I liked both that she’s mentioned. Calico Joe is his new one in that vein that has very good reviews.

Loved the one about the aging football player, Playing for Pizza. Recently finished on audio The Innocent Man.

Really enjoy his writing and always look forward to what he has written.

I used to read them all, but haven’t read one in a few years. Time to Kill has always been my favorite.

I’m a huge Grisham fan. He’s one of the few I still insist in buying in hard bound instead of downloading to my kindle. One of my favorites that doesn’t get mentioned a lot is The Summons.

I’ve gone through The Firm and The Last Juror on Audiobooks and found both OK - not bad and not spectacular.

Have you ever read anything by Harlan Coben? Fast paced, gripping, humorous. After a certain point (5-6 Grisham novels) I just wasn’t enjoying them anymore. Harlan Coben is a terrific writer (Amherst Class of '84), and a smart one. His books have helped me through many hours of unpleasant airline travel.

He doesn’t get enough shelf space in airport bookstores, so maybe get it before you go.

I did enjoy the Associate, a fairly recent Grisham novel. I second the Harlen Coben recommendation, especially the Myron Bolitar series.

The Run Away Jury is probably my favorite. I enjoyed The Rainmaker, The Street Lawyer and The Brethren. I also like Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar books.

If you enjoy Grisham I recommend William Bernhardt’s Ben Kincaid series. They were written in the ‘90s, so somewhat dated now but good legal mysteries.

Another recommendation for legal mysteries is author, Phillip Margolin.

I keep trying to like Grisham but just can’t get there. Try Scott Turow also - not as prolific but a better writer.
