Hi, I’ll be taking mechanical engineering at Caltech, and I’m not sure what type of laptop to buy. I love Macs, but if there’s a ton of windows-specific programs, the hassle of using boot camp wouldn’t quite make up for it. Any ideas?

I thought you are going to Montana State University in Bozeman, MT and University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY

BTW: If you are going to Caltech, and you can’t answer this question yourself, …

Those are my three options, yes, however I don’t yet know the exact list of programs used at Caltech (too busy to search really hard), hence the question to people who might…

Then you should take Caltech off your list. That is not a can-do attitude you will need to succeed at Caltech. You won’t survive there long expecting other people to do your work. Hint: It is not rocket science to find out the recommended computer on a college’s website.

BTW: Too early to buy a computer for college. If you have to buy one now to last through college, then get the fastest computer you can afford.

Macbooks are a waste of money, end of. Students try so hard to justify buying a brand new, $1300 laptop when they can ge something better for 1/2 the price
