I’m having my usual struggles keeping my S properly clothed. We went to all the stores at our largest shopping mall in the state just now & NONE had dress slacks with waist-size 28! The best they could do was khakis (he already has some pairs) and also they suggested kid’s sizes (he has some boy’s size 16 as well).

Anyone with suggestions on how they best clothe young men in dress attire. We believe he is a 27 or 28" waist and inseam of 28 or 30 (hard to know for sure since there were no clothes for him to try on that were the correct style or waist). He weighs about 110-120 or so & is very trim.

He also has some struggles with dress shirts, though he has managed to buy a few long-sleeved dress shirts.

Would appreciate suggestions. He will be starting work as a project engineer in DC in Jan or Feb and would like to dress appropriately.

Oh yea, can it please be washable too? He wants flat front (no pleats), also no cuffs. It should be as difficult to find as it is proving to be. Thanks for your help!

brooks brothers comes to mind…they have a slim cut line and their dress shorts are non-iron washable and very reasonably priced. Pretty much my entire work wardrobe is brooks brothers.

We’ve done well at Nordstrums. We’ve used same saleswoman for 3 years. At first son in workforce, so wanted cacki’s and dress pants. Now he is in grad school, so needed jeans. They hem for free (except shirt sleeves). Saleslady has held items until they go on sale, then shipped huge package across country for $10. He is a 28" waist. She knows what tops are cut slim.

Shopping for son has become easy. Also, GAP and banana republic work well if they have size in stock, and always good with Ts and sweaters.

DS is a long distance runner and quite thin. I’ve struggled with finding pants for him for years. Boys sizes won’t work because he is too tall (inseam 32). Can’t ever find waist sizes that are small enough. Gap carries smaller sizes online but not in their stores. Have also had good luck at Men’s Warehouse.

Try Land’s End Slim Cut shirts. And their washable wool pants aren’t bad. My friend and I both have DHs who are very, very slim and we love those shirts. DH likes the pants, but he likes the Nordstrom ones better. Also try Nordstrom’s Rack. We have found that the Rack can have a larger selection for DH than the stores.

My slim (6 ft. 153 lb.) husband does very well at Banana Republic. I checked online and their pants run down to a 28. The sport coats and pants that he has purchased look pricier than they actually are and have held up well. BR is more expensive than going to the Gap but what my husband has brought home is department store quality. Check out the slim-cut pants on their website and see if anything appeals to you. They have sales often - don’t pay full price.

We have had some luck in the boys section, sizes 18-20 for suits and jackets. S just got 28 waist this year, so we have found things at JCPenney and Kohls. Kohl’s also had dress shirts that worked. We also went to K&G Superstore, because they have a tailor on the premises. Men’s Warehouse has good sales and a tailor as well.

Are you anywhere near an H&M? They offer stylish options at great prices.
Because they are a European company, my tall, slim daughters find more there than typical American stores.
They still don’t offer online shopping, which makes me crazy, but we always find an armful of great choices when we stop in.

DS is also slim…and short. He has had good luck at H&M but does note that their quality isn’t all that terrific. He buys his pants and jeans at Banana Republic. Yes, some other places carry what they call “slim” pants, but the reality is they are mighty baggy in the legs.

We will be heading to Nordstrom after Christmas as we’ve heard their expensive shirts (e.g. Hugo Boss fitted which fit son VERY nicely) will be on sale for 1/2 price. Even at that, it will be more than $50 for a shirt but the fit and fabrics are very nice. DH will come along too…he’d like at least a couple of shirts where the armpits don’t hang down to his waist. That is the biggest problem.

I recently bought a size 20 Brooks Brothers boy’s shirt for DS to try on. It looks a lot slimmer than the men’s sizes…and the pocket is high enough on the chest that DS won’t be tucking it into his pants! Hope it fits.

Try Banana Republic, Express for Men, and H & M (quality isn’t as good as the other two, but good enough to last a season). If he’s looking for nice fitting jeans (for going out with friends, dates, etc.) try Guess—Lincoln Fit. They’re expensive, but look great on slim guys (I have two slim sons in college).

Boys size 18-20 still work for my son (29-30 waist/32 length). Or ordering online from Gap or American Eagle (for jeans). Kohls sometimes has dress pants in 28 or 29. Unfortunately, my son is still getting taller and we just recently had to find 30/34 jeans - only available online apparently.

[Short Men’s Sizes - Jockey Club Ltd.](http://shop.shortmenssizes.com/)
The above is the best place we have found for dress clothes for short and slim men. They carry x short suits and sports coats as well. They also carry shorter arm lengths in dress shirts. They also do an amazing job of fitting you over the phone.
Nordstroms in San Francisco used to carry mens x short sport coats and suits. The last time we looked they had stopped but they are worth a try. They can ship down to a local store so they can be tried on. If he is still in LA he might try to see if their are any stores in Chinatown that cater to the smaller build of many asian males.

My runner son (30/32) likes pants from Banana. I just bought some at Express yesterday but they are for Christmas so I don’t know if he’ll like them. They did have all the sizes, though.

One thing to remember about pants…it’s not JUST the waist size that matters. We have had no trouble finding 28 inch waist pants…but finding 28 inch waist SLIM CUT is a bigger challenge. If we don’t get a slim cut the pant legs are just way too full cut and baggy. That is why DS goes to Banana Republic or Express for jeans and pants. Pricey…but they fit.

I just lucked into finding this thread. My son is a 28 waist too. No fat anywhere!! I’ll definitely try out your suggestions. Last year we bought a beautiful suit at Men’s Wearhouse (on sale). Get on their email list to get sale info.

The 28 or 29 waist is not the problem. Finding the short length and something that has the fit or cut for a shorter and thinner frame is the problem. For a suit or sport coat it makes a big difference if your H or S can wear a short of if they need an extra short. Few stores carry extra short. Ties can also be an issue. My H can find khaki’s and jeans and casual wear in regular stores but it is almost impossible to get good fitting dresswear.
The link I referred to in my earlier post has a physical store in Orange County Ca near South Coast Plaza. There also is a store on Ventura Blvd in the San Fernando Valley which I can’t recall the name of. They mainly are a place that young men buy graduation and bar mitzvah suits but they have a good selection of smaller mens sizes. Maybe another poster knows the store. (thinking that your son is still in the LA area)
Way back when H and I were first dating he was looking for dress clothing. I found a store listing in the phone book for short men’s clothing. I sent H to this store. Turns out I had not read the whole ad and it was for short and portly men. My H was all of 120 lbs.

Thanks so much for all of these tips. Will try Nordstrom’s Rack, as there is one in town and not so far from our home. May try cozying up to a Nordstrom’s salesclerk as well. Mom has a ton of gift cards & gift certificates for that store from friends who like giving her & dad food items from there.

Unfortunately, S is in Honolulu rather than LA at the moment, but we will be back in LA before we head East on our roadtrip, so we can check around when we’re there (tho shopping is not high on our list of fun things to do).

Our BR (which we went to last night) does NOT carry the 28 waist, tho the salesclerks (both slim young men) sure wished they did & confided that they often have to shop at the boy’s sections and competitor’s stores. It baffles me why they haven’t figured out that HI has a lot of slimmer men, especially Asians, in HI.
