My son is tall-ish (5’10" and slim (30" waist)). His size–30/32–seems to be readily available at Costco. I have had good luck with the various “name brands” they put on sale for $20/pair.

Thumper, I hear you! My DH hates shirts that balloon out of his pants and pleated pants that look like clown’s britches, and he is an average size guy. A really slim person will have even more trouble looking for clothing here in the US! I think our SIL shops for his clothes in Europe when he goes back to visit his folks (however, his wife just requested a KitchenAid mixer for Christmas, so pretty soon his clothing troubles will be over :D). I highly recommend outlet malls for slim clothing - CAlvin Klein, Lacoste, and Boss stores at the local outlet mall always have a good selection of slim, stylish and businesslike clothing for men of all ages.

Thanks for all these thoughts & suggestions. I went to WalMart & Nordstrom’s Rack today & bought S some kids size clothing. Am crossing my fingers that he finds some of them suitable, otherwise I stand ready to return all of them (my usual way of shopping for S). He’s about 27 or 28 waist and 29 or 30 inseam. The silly/crazy thing is that HI has so many slim men and boys (in addition to the heavier folks) that it makes NO SENSE that they don’t carry clothing to fit them. They do wear shorts a lot, but can’t wear them to many of their jobs.

The BIG FIND was some 28 length jeans at the Rack for under $30. The cashier said they are cut pretty slim, so we will see how they fit S. H made me promise not to hassle S if he doesn’t like or want to try on any or all of these garments.

I will see about Lands End & whether anything there suits S. If & when you return, do you get a refund of shipping as well? I don’t want to pay a lot for shipping only to find that nothing fits.

He has found a few brands & styles of long-sleeved dress shirts & did OK with them last summer, but I think it was mostly OK for them to dress a bit more casually for the internship than his full-time job that begins in early 2011.

Oh yea, H is a 30 x 30 slim & we have to snatch up whatever we see that’s in his size at Costco, as they always seem to only bring in about TWO of that size & dozens of everything else (even the salesclerks remark about it). He has two or three jeans from there now, so he’s happy. He’s found that Calvin Klein fits him better than the Kirkland brand–it’s a slimmer cut & he & S are SLIM.

Just got off the phone with the nice folks on the toll-free number 1-800-963-4816 at Lands End. They confirmed that they will be happy to provide a FULL refund at Sears if we choose to take the clothing back there for any reason. They suggest I measure S in whatever clothing he feels fits best. There is FREE SHIPPING today until 11:59 central time for purchases totalling over $75 & 40% off highest priced item in order. He said that sizes run pretty true to measurement, so I have to measure S to figure out what sizes to order for him.

Anyway, they will customize the inseam as well, so his slacks won’t be dragging on the ground (hurray). Unfortunately, they don’t have black but at least have navy. Will keep my fingers crossed that I can persuade S to give it a try.

For inseam measurements, take a pair of pants that fit him well and measure with a tape from crotch to hem. You don’t need the guy in the pants at all.

Novelisto - clever
HImom - get on Lands End’s email list and you will get emails about all their sales. You can also have them send catalogs.

Both DH and DS are slim and I have had great luck lately at The Gap.com. I can never find jeans or slacks in the stores for my son since he is slim and all legs (29W, 34L). He probably could take a 28W but he likes his waistlines loose. The new 1969 jeans fit terrific and they have been on sale on and off all month with free shipping. I just ordered two more pairs which cost me 78$ for both, total (tax). DH (31W,30L) also looks great in 1969 jeans. DS likes the standard cut and DH likes the Easy fit. Also, Gaps slimfit dress shirt (size small) looked terrific on DS, I will definitely order him two more in different colors/patterns. They are not “too” fitting, they just fit a 130 lb/5’10ish teenager!

I agree with everything said here: Macy’s, GAP, Banana Republic and American Eagle. Haven’t veered into Norstrom territory. I was afraid it would be too expensive.

Suit pants have worked for “dressy” black pants when necessary.

No matter what the cut, everything hangs in the thighs, even if the butt is fine. DS won’t let me fret and won’t fret himself, so we’ve just gotten used to seeing him like that.

Shirts in small are good when fabrics are not too stiff.

I wear a size 5 shoe – a different kind of headache.

Shucks, neither Brooks Brothers nor Lands End carry anything dressier than chinos in a 28 waist. S already has chinos & khakis & would like to expand his wardrobe with some dressy slacks.

I’m a bit reluctant to order BR, GAP or other brands w/o having him have the ability to try any of these garments on before purchasing. None of our HI stores seem to carry much clothing in a 28. :(

S1 is 5’10.5", 123 lbs., 27-28 W, 34 L. All arms and legs. His Bar Mitzvah suit was an 18 slim at Nordstrom’s (cheaper than we expected!) and he was able to wear it a couple of years. Senior year in HS we went to Men’s Wearhouse and got him a men’s 37 suit. Needed some alterations, but it looks great on him, esp. since he has developed broad shoulders in college. MW had some 14.5/35-36 sleeve shirts, too. It’s hard to find anything smaller than a 15, with sleeves other than 32-33.

We have had good luck with 28 W jeans at Old Navy. I used to get odd sizes (literally 11, 13, etc.) at JCP in boys jeans. They came in slim and were trim fit, and I think went up to 19.

There is no Men’s Wearhouse in HI, for now. Our Old Navy doesn’t stock the slimmer sizes and S says he already has enough casual clothing and is looking for dressier slacks. Might give it up in the near future and let him figure it out. He might stick with khakis & chinos unless there is some amazing breakthrough.

Anyone ever try the uniform slacks for young men at Target? They have a 28" waist & 32" inseam (I will probably have to hem). It might be a better fit than what WalMart offers in its boy’s section. A thought anyway.

Was trying the Mens Wearhouse website but it seems to be malfunctioning & I keep getting error messages. :(

S is apprehensive about buying w/o trying on the garments anyway. So far, he has not been very happy with things he’s tried. His best fitting slacks are those he inherited from his dad when HE was in college many decades back! I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. :)

Himom, do you have an Express there? My son has gotten some nice dress slacks in his very slim size (and they do NOT hang in the butt) at Express. Ditto Banana Republic.

I have no luck at all at any of the major retailers finding clothes for S. He has the same inseam as the OP, is slim, but not through the hips. Jeans at Gap will work. S can find stuff at Urban Outfitters. We searched all over for dressier stuff including Nordstroms. They’ll fit slim but not small. Really, the only thing that works for nice slacks is getting something tailored.

JC Penney has J Ferrar Dress Pants in a 28x30, and you can check if they are available in your local store.

They aren’t washable though.

For my son they don’t have them in long enough lengths online, but sometimes I can find them in my local store.

I’ll just throw out where I buy most of our family’s clothes–eBay. If you’re not in a particular hurry, you can find anything.

I just bought my sons a couple pair of slacks at Brooks Brothers that they could wear with a sport jacket for a nice night out. The shirts at BB are by far the best fit for a slim guy…they look like they have been tailered to fit. Banana Republic is also really good for thin guys.

HiMom- how tall is your son? I know for my family member who wears a similar size but is built on the small size most of the major retailers even in those sizes look like clown pants. The problem with boys pants is they also are usually not as nice of a fabric.
My H wears shorts most days so luckily we don’t have to deal with the problem. I looked in his closet. His shirts are a 15-31 short which we found at a short mens store. They fit nicely and are cut close to the body. Suit was from same store. Dress pants- He has a nice pair of grey slacks that are from the boys department at Nordstroms. Also a pair of Tommy Hilfliger mens pants also from Nordstroms. Nordstroms will tailor for free. I know it is hard to get a young adult male to the store but the best thing is to just bring him to a Nordstrom and get a good sales person who will get him to try on many different brands and styles and see if they have something that works.
I have never found pants that work for my slender short male or my slender short D at Lands End.
Will he need to wear a tie?

Macy’s has a line called “INC.” We have found their clothes to be stylish, slim cut and better than reasonably priced when on sale. My son is six feet tall, so they are good for height as well.

Have bought D some clothes at Macy’s–it was the only place that had things slim enough. She has had somewhat better luck than S.

S is about 5’6" and 115 pounds or so, 28" waist & inseam probably about 28-29" (but hemming isn’t a huge issue). Most of the brands and recommendations that have been listed here are great if you’re at least a 30. There are NO Penny’s stores left in our state of HI. NONE of the retailers we have found at our largest mall carry size 28 waist. Have not had much luck with boy’s sizes as S says they fit oddly. He has bought a few things from WalMart that cover his body but are NOT at all fitted or attractive. We will give Target a try, as they appear to have some uniform pants that are 28" waist and plain front and washable.

Will see what else we can find. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions–he likes to try things on before we purchase because generally he’s not liked the fit (it really does look pretty poor), and it’s hard to pay money for something that looks bad.
